Text: Casella and Berger (2002). Statistical Inference, 2nd Edition, Duxbury.
Course Coverage: Most sections from Chapters 1 through 5 in Casella and Berger will be covered.
Homework: 13 weekly homework sets will be assigned due Wednesdays at the beginning of the lecture. Late homeworks will not be accepted. Assigned homework problems will be posted on the class website. You are encouraged to work in groups, but copying the solutions is not allowed. That is, each student is expected to write up the solutions in his/her own words, even if the problems have been solved in collaboration with others. Answers to challenging homework problems will be provided. Because collaboration is allowed, the homework grade will only contribute 10% to the total grade.
Independent reading: An important part of a graduate student’s experience is independent learning. Thus, you will be expected to read sections of the text book in parallel with topics covered in lectures.
Exams: There will be two midterms and a fi l. The dates are as follows:
Mid-term 1 Wednesday, 29th of September
Mid-term 2 Wednesday, 3rd of November
Final exam To be announced
Exams will be closed book and closed notes. You will however be allowed to bring one sheet
(both sides) of notes for each exam.
Grade Breakdown: homework 10% mid-term 1 30% mid-term 2 30% fi exam 30%
