I am a 1986 Graduate of College of Creative Studies with BFA in Industrial Design.
I have posted a variety of project material at www.callawaydesign.net. Numerous examples of
2d and 3d ability are represented on the website. Additionally, where user research,
manufacturing constraints, and project dynamics have driven design – those influences are
explained.
I was formally trained in Total Quality Management (TQM), Design for Manufacture and Assembly
(DFMA), and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) while employed by Navistar. Additionally, I
gained extensive informal experience under the guidance of Dave Smith, FIDSA (Fitch,
Richardson, Smith) gathering user input (interviews), and observing user behavior – while
employed with Crown. Additional experience with Jim Ryan, FIDSA in John Deere account (while
with Henry Dreyfuss). While with Dreyfuss, I worked closely with Alvin Tilley (author of
Humanscale) on human factors and ergonomic related matters.
Utilizing the tools above (where appropriate) I have considerable experience in conducting
research in order to determine where value may be introduced to the product - including review of
manufacturing practices, packaging, shipping and retail display costs relative to packaging,
marketing, advertising, safety, ergonomics, end user data, etc. With value drivers being identified,
the design of the product can address means to reduce costs, while improving appeal, reliability,
durability, safety, sales and profit. Please see Crown, Navistar, and BPM tabs on website for
detail.
In all aspects of my career, the ability to communicate has been an essential skill. I have
presented to, and interacted with everyone from fabricators, assembly line personnel, corporate
executives, customers, outside agencies, students and professional organizations. I am
comfortable writing, speaking, and in casual interaction in any situation.
With respect to materials and manufacturing processes, the products in my portfolio have been
manufactured using injection molding, blow molding, resin injection molding, cast urethane,
vacuum forming, compression molding, fiberglass, carbon fiber, cast iron, stamped steel and
selective laser sintering.
I enjoy travel – I have worked for extended periods in both France and Germany. I work
comfortably in structured development programs as at Navistar, Crown and Dreyfuss. I have
worked with equal comfort where visual content has been extensively prescribed through highly
defined brand continuity directives (Crown and John Deere).
I have in excess of 20,000 hours experience with ProE. I have 5,000 + hours using Catia, and
several hundred hours experience with Solidworks. I have used Photoshop and Freehand since
1993.
I have 2,000 + hours experience operating Selective Laser Sintering equipment to produce parts
raced in NASCAR, Indy Car, and LeMans.
Thank You,
Matt Callaway
