Job Description Job Title: Management Structure: Location: Hours per week: Motor Vehicle Technician (MVT) Reports to: Workshop Supervisor Based at the SMaRT Garage in Bexley. Travel to other locations for training and other purposes may also be required. 40hrs per week (excluding meal breaks) – initially Monday to Friday plus Saturday morning (4hrs) but will change to 7 days on a shift basis. Working flexibly as required based on business requirements. Background: First Step Trust (FST) is a real work based charity that provides work experience, training and employment opportunities for people excluded from working life because of mental health problems or other disadvantages (workforce members). The garage at Crayford, Bexley is a new venture and First Step Trust’s fourth garage to open. The premises has been refurbished and fully equipped and is now ready to start trading to local businesses, organisations and the public. Job Summary. You will be part of a team of technicians servicing, repairing and diagnosing customers’ vehicles. You will ensure all work is done on time, to a first class standard and meets all legislation including trading standards and health and safety. The MVT is required to use their previous experience to ensure that all garage tasks and functions are accessible to long term unemployed people (our trainees). In practice this will mean that you will provide a combination of training, support and supervision to individual workers to ensure they can undertake all workshop tasks. This is a hands on job requiring a high level of commitment to working with people as colleagues with equal potential and ability to achieve without compromising on the need to ensure that everyone works safely, efficiently and effectively. A flexible approach and the ability to use your initiative will be essential at all times. Main Duties 1. To provide first class vehicle servicing, diagnostics and repair. The work will include diagnosis of vehicle problems, solving those problems and general maintenance and repair on all makes and models of vehicle. There will also be a need to attend distress work and vehicle recovery as required by the business. 2. To work with the Workshop Supervisor to ensure that all work meets Trading Standards and Motor Codes requirements and approved industry practices. 3. To involve people with mental health and other disadvantages as equal partners in the planning and successful delivery of all repair work to agreed deadlines. 4. To ensure that all work undertaken meets the highest possible safety standards by implementing FST quality control procedures and that at all times you operate in First Step Trust. To ensure materials, tools and workshop consumables are controlled and used effectively and efficiently to ensure minimum wastage. 6. Implement FST’s policies, procedures and control systems, which makes real work accessible to long term unemployed people and enables them to develop real and transferable work skills. 7. To provide on the job training to trainees in all areas of automotive servicing and repair. 8. To be fully aware of all FST policies and procedures. 9. To work in accordance within the limits and parameters as set out in FST’s policies and procedures at all times. 10. Updated 04/2013 Page 2 of 3 PERSON SPECIFICATION The candidate must have the following essential skills, experience and attributes: Qualifications and Experience Fully qualified and skilled technician with minimum three years post apprenticeship experience and appropriate level 2 professional qualifications in the motor industry (i.e. City and Guilds or IMI). Previous experience of MOT testing. To have comprehensive experience in the servicing and repair of all makes and models of motor vehicles. Full current driving licence, preferably clean. Hands on experience of working with apprentices, trainees or other people skills. Knowledge and skills Experience of using Internet and email. Genuine commitment to Health and Safety. Good time management skills. Comprehensive experience of fault diagnosis and vehicle maintenance and repair. Able to meet the physical demands of the job. Knowledge to ensure that vehicles are repaired in a safe and secure manner. Ability to make complex tasks and procedures accessible to people who may be struggling with low self-esteem, issues with literacy and numeracy or other disadvantages. Essential Attitudes Empathetic.
