Analogies Examples
Example 1: Scorching : Freezing :: _______ : ________ (read “scorching is to freezing as blank is
to blank.”)
A) Milk : Cow
B) Tooth : Dentist
C) Computer : Printer
D) Love : Hate
1) The definitions of the two words are basically Hot : Cold.
2) The relationship is that they are opposites. So we need to identify the opposites in our choices.
3) You should know the definitions of these words.
4) Love and Hate are the only opposites in the choices.
Example 2: Unicycle : Bicycle :: __________ : ___________ (read “unicycle is to bicycle as
blank is to blank.”)
A) universe : galaxy
B) unilateral : bilateral
C) monophonic : polyphonic
D) tricycle : bicycle
Write the definition for
both words, even if
they’re obvious.
Your notebook should look like this:
A
B
2. Unicycle : bicycle
::
_____unilateral : bilateral_______
One-wheeled transportation : two-wheeled transportation
Write out the
relationship of the words
in an A:B format.
The A:B relationship is 1:2. (A is one, B is two)
Universe – the totality of known objects
X Galaxy – a large system of stars isolated from other systems in space
Unilateral – involving one side only
Bilateral – involving two sides
Monophonic – reproduction of one sound
Polyphonic – reproduction of many sounds
Tricycle – three-wheeled transportation
Bicycle – two-wheeled transportation
Define all the words in
the choices, even if they
are obvious to you.
Sometimes you don’t
need a dictionary
because you can figure
out the definition from
the www’s!
Eliminate answers that
are obviously wrong
then choose the answer
that has the same
relationship as the A:B.
Mark it and write it
clearly on the top line.
