VOLUNTEERS – COMMUNITY PARENTS FLINTSHIRE
Are you a parent with time on your hands? Do you feel able to help other parents within Flintshire?
If so, why not become a Flintshire Community Parents Volunteer. Flintshire Community Parents
support volunteers to achieve their own goals by providing opportunities that promote confidence
and personal development.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer would be invited to attend initial training. This usually
takes half a day a week over a six to eight week period. At present, the Volunteer programme is
being accredited through the Open College Network giving volunteers the opportunity to gain a
qualification. Once initial training is completed, volunteers will be linked with a family and a visit for
approximately one hour per month.
For more information please call (01244) 545021 or call in at Flintshire Community Parents Office
at the Westwood Centre, Tabernacle Street, Buckley CH7 2JT.
VOLUNTEER MENTOR PROJECT - FLINTSHIRE LOCAL VOLUNTARY COUNCIL
Our Mentoring Project matches disabled children and young people with volunteer mentors.
Volunteers are there to support their mentee to make positive choices in their life and to set and
achieve personal goals. There are a few basic practical requirements for our volunteers. We know
that positive role models come in all shapes and sizes, but we do ask that mentors are 18 or over.
They should also live in or around Flintshire, to make travelling realistic on a weekly basis. Our
volunteers meet with the child or young person they are matched with regularly, so you will need to
have time to give a few hours a week (we know you’ll probably want to go on holiday at some point,
so don’t worry about that).
What might you gain from volunteering as a mentor? - Becoming a mentor is an opportunity to
gain new skills and experiences that might be useful in gaining paid work or making career
changes. It is a chance to meet new people and hopefully provide a sense of satisfaction from
knowing that you are making a positive contribution by supporting a child or young person with
disabilities.
The training we offer - Our training programme aims to produce volunteer mentors who
understand the concept of mentoring and who are able to engage in one-to-one mentoring
relationships with children and young people with disabilities. Mentors are required to assist their
mentees in recognising their strengths and to develop further their individual identity, skills,
knowledge, abilities and talents in order to make them build on their confidence. In order to prepare
mentors, we run a training course which has been developed specifically to help volunteers
become an effective mentor. Mentors must complete the training course, which forms part of the
selection process, before being linked to a Mentee. The Mentor training course is a lot of fun and
involves the trainee Mentors in lots of discussion and group exercises. Areas covered in the
training include – Mentoring
Health and Safety Risk assessment
What to do next - Thinking of be-coming a volunteer. Give us a call – we’ll send you an
information pack & application form. Fill in the application form and return to us. We will invite you
for an informal interview. Complete the training, we will look at matching you with a mentee. Meet
with your mentee and their family, supported by the project coordinator. You will then become a
volunteer mentor with the Flintshire Volunteer Mentor Project. If successful you will be invited to
attend the training programme. Phone: 01352 744000. E-mail: purdy.edwards@flvc.org.uk . Web:

If so, Home-Start will give you free training to prepare you for your visits, and if you like, this can
