Year 10

Year 10 differentiated EASY START unit plans
Ian Lowe, MAV, 2008
By Year 10 the range of mathematical background of students in a typical class is enormous.
Some schools ignore this, and proceed as if it did not exist. They have all students buy the same,
academically-inclined, textbook and march them through it at a pace suited to the more able half of
the class. As a consequence there are many disengaged, disenchanted students some of whom
create massive behaviour disruptions. This disadvantages the more able, interested students, and
they are more inclined to under-perform.
This set of plans supports the proposal that genuinely mixed classes can be managed, to
everyone’s advantage. It starts with the assumption that the class includes students who are
working towards VELS Standards 4, 5 and 6. It is done so that a single teacher can meet the
learning needs of all students. The goal is neither to keep them different or make them the
same, but to enable all to reach as much of their potential as possible in the time available.
Those who are working towards Standard 4 are likely to pursue mathematics in VCAL (Victorian
Certificate of Applied Learning), VET (Vocational Education and Training) or VCE Foundation
Mathematics. They have the need for practical, hands-on, real-world-focused mathematics. The
major source of study is printed units from the CD Maths at Work (engaging them in real-world
investigations) and the CD (or five books) Careers and Maths.
Those who are working towards Standard 5 are likely to pursue mathematics in a Year 11 General
Mathematics course with possible extension to Further Mathematics in Year 12. They also need
interesting relevant material, but it should cover the concepts at a greater depth than is needed for
the first group.
Those who are working towards Standard 6 are likely to pursue mathematics in General
Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and possible extension to Specialist Mathematics. These
students need a fully developed course, with understanding and an academic challenge that will
adequately prepare them for VCE success.
With the right selection of resources (possibly including a year-level textbook for the top level only)
these three groups can be managed in the same classroom. Flexibility is important; no student
should regard their initial level as fixed. Weaker students can be stimulated by the presence of
others who are doing more challenging work, particularly if it is also hands-on and engaging. This
can motivate them to try higher levels.
The plans below relate to teaching ideas (in Teach for Understanding, on this CD), investigations
for the entire class (RIME and Maths300), worksheets for all levels (Active Learning and Active
Learning 2) and software for all levels (Interactive Learning). For the topics of ratio, proportion,
scale and trigonometry, the sources are the units Hands-on Ratio, Hands-on Proportion and
Percentages, Hands-on Scale, and Hands-on Trigonometry. In 2011 the CD MApps (Maths
investigations in the real world) has been added. All these resources, including Maths at Work and
Careers and Maths and MApps (Maths Applications in the real world, are available from MAV.
The EASY START plans for Year 10 include suggested lesson-by-lesson plans for teachers
beginning this journey, without depending on a textbook. It is important to remember that these
suggested lessons, worksheets etc. are notional only. It is suggested that you start by
looking at these, but you should always feel free to modify and choose other resources for
your students. A more comprehensive list of suitable resources is available.
Assessment
Each unit includes two sources of multiple-choice items: NAPLAN items from previous tests, and
TIMSS items. Each is also hyperlinked to a spreadsheet for marking student responses.

“NAPLAN items” hyperlinks to a file that contains a list of the items related to that topic with
their answers. There are also hyperlinks to the ACARA website from which you may download
the previous years’ tests. You will need to print these out and physically cut and paste the
items to make a pre-test for your students. This cannot be prepared for you electronically for
copyright reasons.
Blue = free hyperlink, black = book, no hyperlink

2
Red = MAV product hyperlink
“TIMSS items” (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) hyperlinks to a set of
items that are topic-related. These are similar to NAPLAN, but written for Years 4 and 8 –
usually on separate pages.
Lesson warm-ups
At the start of each unit there are two forms of daily warm-up activity.

“Numeracy games (cards or dice)” hyperlinks to an instruction file for teacher use. These
games offer practice of number skills. They do not take the place of understanding.

“10 quick questions (decimals)” hyperlinks to a spreadsheet for an interactive whiteboard to
give students some skill practice with numbers. They do not take the place of understanding.
Summary of plans for Year 10
The plan allows 3 weeks per topic (say 12 lessons of ~50 minutes or 9 lessons of ~70 minutes).
There is enough here for a wide range of levels, from basic work to more extended material. For
the upper level (only), a conventional textbook might be added as a suitable resource.
