Organization Description:
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is the OU chapter of the national
Society of Physics Students (an American Institute of Physics organization), and has the following as its
main purposes:
(a) to encourage and assist students interested in physics to develop the knowledge, competence,
enthusiasm, and social responsibility essential to the advancement of physics;
(b) to stimulate interest in advanced study and research in physics;
(c) to develop friendship among physics students, faculty members, and the OU community;
(d) to promote public interest in physics;
(e) to recognize high scholarship and potential achievement in physics among outstanding students by
means of membership in the Sigma Pi Sigma national physics honor society.
OU SPS activities throughout the year include faculty lab tours, research talks, graduate school
preparation talks, study sessions, and public outreach activities at elementary schools, as well as several
events which mix fun with education, such as the Annual Spring Picnic, SPS Halloween Party (featuring
"Dr. Indestructo"), and the biweekly "Fortnightly Friday Physics Flix". The OU Society of Physics
Students maintains an internet message board to encourage communication between physics majors, and
is currently in the process of building up our website to include a showcase of undergraduate physics
research at OU.
