CLASS: Networking

DATE: Friday May 15th, 2009
TOPIC: TCP/IP Protocols
AIM: How does DHCP work?
NOTE:
1) At the end of the period, leave your computer on the desktop screen, put the keyboard on top of the monitor and push in your chair.
H.W. # 69:
1) What are some settings that are configured by DHCP?
2) What are the benefits of using DHCP over static assignment and configuration of TCP/IP information
DO NOW:
What four settings have we discussed that can be set in the
TCP/IP properties?
Depending on which of these had to change, we would have to
go to every machine and reset these TCP/IP properties.
Fortunately for us, there is something called Dynamic Host
Configuration
Protocol
(DHCP).
Go
to
www.techweb.com/encyclopedia and look up DHCP. What is
DHCP?
PROCEDURE:
Write the AIM and DO NOW.
Get students working!
Take attendance.

Assignment #1:
To run DHCP, you’ll need a computer running DHCP server software. What is
is the IP address of the computer running our DHCP server software?
Assignment #2:
Go to http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/w2kdhcpc.html and
read how to set up a DHCP server using Windows 2000 Server. After reading
how to set up a DHCP server using Windows 2000 Server, answer the following
questions:
A) What are some devices that are traditionally
given static IP addresses as opposed dynamic
IP addresses?
B) What is a DHCP scope?
C) What is a DHCP lease?
2
D) Checking your own computer. When did you obtain the lease for
your IP address?
When does the lease for your IP address expire?
Assignment #3:
Any Windows 98 and later Windows client that is configured for DHCP,
but unable to access a DHCP server will always default to a special IP
address starting with 169.254. This is the APIPA address. Look up
APIPA at www.techweb.com/encyclopedia . What is APIPA?
Under what circumstances might you have to renew or release you IP address
information?
Sample Test Questions:
1) The DNS root directory is represented by what symbol?
A) . (dot)
B) / (forward slash) C) \ (Back Slash)
D) $ (Dollar Sign)
2) What do you call the pool of addresses that a DHCP server may allocate to client systems?
A) DHCP pool
B) DHCP scope
C) DHCP array
D) DHCP lease
3) What folder in the DHCP program lists the systems currently leasing DHCP IP addresses?
A) Reservations
B) Address Pool C) Address Leases
D) Current addresses
4) The users on your network haven’t been able to connect to the server for 30 minutes. You check and reboot the server, but it’s unable
to ping either its own loopback address or any of your client systems. What should you do?
A) Restart the DHCP server
B) Restart the DNS server
C) Replace the NIC on the server, because it failed
D) Have you users ping the server
5) Select the protocol suite that is used to communicate across the Internet.
A) TCP/IP
B) IPX/SPX
C) NetBEUI
D) AppleTalk
6) A web site address such as www.ebay.com is called a(an)
A) IP address B) domain name
C) MAC address
D) protocol
7) For an IP address to be valid, it must use a combination of an IP address, along with a(n)
A) ARP
B) DNS
C) host address
D) subnet mask

Short Answer Questions:
1) You have just subnetted your Class B network, using a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0. How many usable subnetworks were created?
2) What is the name given to the process by which protocols become connected to each other and to the NIC?
3) What is a group of connected protocols called?
4) A) Although your eye reads domain names from left to right, the name is resolved in what manner?
B) Where is the top-level domain?
5) A) DNS and its databases are used to match domain names to
B) This is called
6) An IP address such as 207.46.138.20 is really a(an)
7) Each group of numbers in an IP address is limited to values between
8) This is used to determine the portion of the IP address that identifies the network and the portion that identifies the host.
9) This is used to test whether a computer network’s capabilities are functioning.
10) What does DHCP stand for?
11) DNS stands for what?
12) Explain the relationship between a HOSTS file and DNS.
Fill-Ins
1) A computer must be assigned to a ________________ if it wants to communicate with other computers outside its network or
subnetwork.
2) The ____________ is the IP address of a router port that passes data packets outside of your LAN
