Teacher
Explain the task – to be able to listen for gist and
detail and identify which 5 out of the 8 statements
are mentioned in the text. Teacher reads transcript
twice.
Pupils
Pupils listen to a dialogue and identify the
five activities mentioned out of the 8
given.
Teacher asks students share what they found easy
about the task and what they found difficult. Explain
trying to build up vocabulary and ask pupils to traffic
light vocabulary on the transcript. This leads on to
Activity 2 where pupils are given the chance to build
up their vocabulary through use of synonyms.
WILF: develop and extend vocabulary
Explain what a synonym is and show the examples
on the board
Explain that synonyms are frequently used in
comprehension texts and the accompanying
questions.
Pupils feedback what one thing they
found easy and one thing they need to
improve. Using a code, they highlight in
three different colours words they know
already, words they are not sure of, and
words they don’t know.
Set the task: to complete the worksheet on
synonyms.
Show pupils the 6 sentences on the board (via
powerpoint). Their challenge is to turn the sentence
from either positive to negative or negative to
positive.
Blockbuster game – if the word is a connective or
adjective pupils give a synonym. If it is a phrase
then they put it into a negative.
