Dr. McGay Latin Deponent Verbs 1 Nomen Latin 3- Ecce Romani Ch. 37 Deponent Verbs What? Another type of verb? Well deponents are totally easy Just remmebr the simple rule: You can recognize deponent verbs by (1) the 3 principal parts, (2) the parts are in the passive: -or, -rī, PPP + sum: moror, morārī, morātus sum = to delay So, let’s review basic passive endings: ↓ ACTIVE voice English Pronouns PASSIVE voice 1st Person singular -ō “I” 2nd Person singular -s “you” rd 3 Person singular -t “he/she/it” 1st Person Plural -mus “we” 2nd Person Plural -tis “you”, “y’all” 3rd Person Plural -nt “they” -re “to…”, “to be…” (drop –re from infinitive) (verb)! (verb)! INFINITIVE Imperative Singular Imperative Plural -te 1 -re -minī When you get to the (1) imperfect, don’t forget –ba-; (2) the future for 1st/2nd conj. verbs is –bor, -beris, -bitur, -bimur, -bimini, -buntur; (3) the future for 3rd/4th conj. verbs is – ar, -eris, etur, -emur, -emini, -entur. 1. Give only the Latin passive equivalents to these active endings (3rd futures in italics): -t = -s = -mus = -ō = -nt = -tis = -re = -te = -bat = -bās = -bāmus = -bam = -bant = -bātis = -bō = -bis = -bunt = -bitis = -bit = -bimus = -et = -ēs = -ēmus = -am = -ent = -ētis = -iet = -iam = 1 Except for 3rd conjugation verbs, the it is only –ī. Example: pōnere = to put/ pōnī = to be put Dr. McGay Latin Deponent Verbs 2 Nomen Latin 3- Ecce Romani Ch. 37 When you get to the perfect system (perfect, pluperfect, future perfect), remember that there is NO perfect active forms (the ol’ 3rd principal part), so you need to jump to the Perfect Participle and add the helping verb in sum esse. Important !!! the perfect partciple is active, not passive in translation. You have options when translating it: (1) “having verbed”, (2) “verbing”, (3) and don’t forget the contextual translations: “when/while/after/because/since/although/if/upon”: so, secutus/a/um = (1) “having followed,” or (2) “following,” (3) “when/while/after/because/since/although/if/upon having followed/following” (1) Do a verb synopsis of: Principal parts: moror, morārī, morātus sum = to delay, stay, hang out Person: INDICATIVE PRESENT 1st Number: LATIN FORMS Plural Gender: Masculine INDICATIVE DEPONENT ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS IMPERFECT FUTURE PERFECT PLUPERFECT FUTURE PERF.
