A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
Hi All!
I hope that you all had a good festive season and that you are ready for whatever 2011 can
throw at us!
No doubt that December was a chaotic month with snow hitting most parts of Britain. Inverness
certainly had its moments but it didn’t suffer as much as other airports. The biggest problem
here seems to be aircraft de-icing, causing delays, but the knock-on effect of the London
Airports problems certainly was a major factor. It was a relief that 2010 went out relatively warm!
For those that work here it was truly a nightmare dealing with snow clearing, delays, diversions,
and all that entails not least upset and grumpy passengers and pilots. My heart goes out to
them all!
For the enthusiast it was very disappointing with only 9 new visitors, three of which had been
here in other guises before, compared to 13 in December 2009. Looking through the log there
was nothing outstanding at all!
I will be doing a separate summary for the year, but there were 318 first visits this year in
comparison to 392 in 2009, a deficit of 74. The visits overall were up by 11 to 1382!
We can only hope that 2011 is ash free and weather friendly, with fingers crossed!
Edited from the daily reports:
1st: Inverness stayed open today, but of course 4 return Gatwick flights were all cancelled, while that
airport was closed. A tech aircraft caused problems on the Stornoway service and with Edinburgh closed
mail flights have been hit. Making matters worse, the Easyjet from Luton suffered a bird strike on landing,
and while there was only superficial damage it is an airline requirement that the aircraft is inspected by
engineers. The aircraft (G-EZAN) is night-stopping awaiting engineers to get through the weather to
check it. We still managed a few biz jets, and Coastguard S.92A G-SARB that had rescued an expectant
mother from Lochinver.
2nd: A snow free day, and a new aircraft for Inverness when Eastern SAAB 2000 G-CFLV diverted in due
to snow at Aberdeen. Gatwick still closed and out based E195 still stuck down there.
3rd: The new Lighthouse Board EC.135 G-CGPI made its 1st visit today, a previous visitor as G-TAGG.
One of the Direct Flight Caravan IIs G-MAFB was also a 1st visit today, and the temperature went above
freezing for a while!
4th: Interesting visitor today was Diamond Twin Star G-GFDA.

5th: Snow closed again 0900-1110.
6th: Snow overnight closed the airport from 0630-1225. Inconsiderate as there is no overnight shift
Sunday/Monday to clear it! Add to that snow at Kirkwall and Stornoway with viscous slots at Gatwick and
it added up to a day of cancellations and chaos!
8th: Unfortunately the aircraft de-icing unit failed again causing the Manchester and Gatwick flights to
cancel, and the EZY Bristol to night-stop.
9th: It stayed above freezing again today, peaking at +4! What is more to the point, there are aircraft to
report including a first visit by Citation Sovereign OK-EMA, mind you, you had to be early and quick to
catch it!
10th: Cessna 560XLS OO-AIE arrived on a first visit, and a nippy turn around on G-RSXL – 11 minutes
from landing to take off – almost a touch and go!
11th: GA wise it was a busier than normal Saturday which included a first visit by Malibu Mirage N321CR.
13th: Still ticking over well, in spite the time of year. Netjets Gulfstream 550 CS-DKJ was here on only its
second visit.
16th: There was a lot of snow disruption today with Stornoway, Kirkwall and Aberdeen all closed at various
times. Inverness closed at 2030 for the rest of the day. Mail flights were particularly disrupted as the
following were all stuck in Inverness being based or having diverted in.
LET 410 OY-PBH/OY-PBI; Merlin D-CPSW; Metro OY-BJP; SAAB 340 G-GNTB/G-GNTF; SH.360 OYMUG/OY-PBV.
17th: The airport finally opened at 0800 for a day that must have been a logistical nightmare for the
airlines. Out of place aircraft and snow all over caused the cancellation of 15 flights at Inverness. There
was one visitor, a Netjet Beech 400XP CS-DMX!
18th: “Flights disrupted by snow over the border today” – that was how my daily report for 18.12.2009 started
which was uncanny considering the snow at Gatwick, Heathrow and elsewhere today!
19th: We were lucky again with no fresh snow, but of course delays and cancellations due to other
peoples suffering. One first visit was a diverted Eastern Airways SAAB 2000 G-CERY – well they all
count!
21st: A beautiful sunny (but cold) day, and only the 8 th first visit of the month, Learjet 40 I-PARS was very
welcome!
22nd: An exceedingly nippy day, varying between -12 and only briefly -5! Falcon 900B N900SX paid a
return visit as did long based SAAB LY-NSC.
23rd: Legacy G-THFC was here on its first visit as such, but the frame has been here as G-RRAZ & GRUBN.
24th: The only visitors today were Stornoway diversions as the runway was ice-closed for the day. At one
point there were 5 SAAB 340s on the apron: G-LGND/F/J/M and G-GNTF.
25th: Airport closed for Christmas Day, just as well as it snowed!
27th: A Netjet in and one out, with a Manx Be C90GT the action today. There was an additional Easyjet as
well.
28th: A nice steady day that included a return visit of Legacy G-THFC.
29th: A splendid day, sadly nothing new, but three here for only the second time, most interesting of which
was Learjet EC-ILK, last here in March 2003.
30th: After yesterday’s sunshine an utterly dreich day, the only good thing was it stayed above freezing
again! A bit of excitement today when one of our regulars, Beechjet 400XP F-HITM diverted in with a
suspected fuel leak when on one of its regular runs from Stornoway to Lorient. The only other inbounds
today were regulars with HB-AEU, Do.328JET and OY-ZWO Falcon 2000LX.
31st: Nothing Stunning for the last day of the year, but G-EZFU A319 was here for only the second time.
The last aircraft to land in 2010 was BEE 833 G-ECOE Dash 8 from Birmingham at 1723, and the last to
depart was GMA 438C G-SASC Beech B200C to Aberdeen.

(Royal Mail flights) BDI “BIRDIE”
Benair operate flights for Royal Mail using a based LET 410 to and from Kirkwall, utilising either OY-PBH
or OY-PBI. Occasionally these flights are operated by Metro OY-BJP. They also operate an overnight
flight Inverness>Edinburgh>Inverness using one of the following Short 360s OY-MUG or OY-PBV from
Monday-Friday.
