POSITION DESCRIPTION
Unit I
POSITION TITLE:
MACHINIST I
REPORTS TO:
DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR
POSITION SUMMARY: Perform duties required to set up and operate various machines, including
manual and CNC equipment to finish parts or prepare for next operation. Work from blueprints, part prints,
drawings and verbal instructions.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Essential Functions:
1. Obtain and review work order and part print to determine machine setup, production methods and
sequence of operation as well as materials and tools required.
2. Load program into computer; write new programs or make necessary adjustments to existing programs
based on calculations from work order or blueprint.
3. Select, position, and secure dies, tooling, and fixtures onto machine using ruler, square, shims,
templates, hand tools, and built-in-gauges.
4. Position and clamp stops, guides, tracks, fixtures and turntables.
5. Load part into machine fixture and secure with clamps for machining.
6. Adjust controls to set and regulate machining factors, such as RPMs, wire speed, pressure, side rails,
progression, depth of ram stroke, adjustment rolls, chuck, jaws, machine feeds and speeds, gearing and
pins according to type of material used and written guidelines.
7. Prove out setups and produce a pilot work piece and verify conformance of machined work piece to
specifications using measuring instruments, such as appropriate gauges, test fixtures, calipers and
micrometers; make necessary adjustments.
8. Operate machinery and inspect parts to insure parts being produced retain tolerance, squareness,
concentricity, parallelism and finish; move materials as necessary in the performance of duties.
9. Troubleshoot production problems to include adjusting and replacing dull or damaged tooling and
fixtures.
10. Assist and train other machine operators with set-ups, troubleshooting, and inspection of parts to insure
that operators produce quality parts.
11. Perform preventive maintenance to maintain and lubricate machine tools and equipment.
12. Complete paperwork regarding production time, inventory, and location of parts and enter into database
system using personal computer.
13. Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions to
proper supervision.
14. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition; follow prescribed safety rules and
regulations.
15. Transports waste from process container to waste container.

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance
of the functions of this job.
1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop
and crouch, push, pull, reach, grasp, feel, talk, and hear.
2. Generally light physical effort. The employee is required to lift more than 60 pounds rarely and/or 25
to 60 pounds occasionally and move around large areas or to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move
objects unassisted or with the use of a hand truck or hoist.
3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include clarity of vision at a distance of 20 inches or less
with the ability to judge distance and space relationships along with adjusting the eye to bring objects
into sharp focus for reading machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used
in the inspection of parts.
Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance
of the functions of this job.
Good working conditions. Exposed to any number of elements, but with none present to the extent of
being disagreeable.
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge: Requires the use of advanced trade mathematics with the use of complicated drawings,
precision measuring instruments and a personal computer; interpretation requires advanced skills
knowledge and is equivalent to one to three years applied trades training.
Experience: Requires over 5 years to gain sufficient experience to perform the requirements of the
position.
Skills and Abilities: which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:
1. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions which are furnished in written
and oral form.
2. Ability to deal with problems involving standard and nonstandard situations.
3. Ability to stand on feet for prolonged periods of time.
4. Ability to communicate and work with others.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated
with this position:
General hand tools and power tools, dies, fixtures, machine tools, precision measuring instruments and
a variety of machines, including manual and CNC equipment.
License(s)/Certification(s) Required: Annual training in hazardous waste materials/transport will be
performed in accordance with DOT, RCRA, EPA and OSHA. Training records are kept on site.
