Missouri Press Association and the Local Media Association (LMA) can help provide answers to questions about this threat. A webinar titled “Valassis: US Postal Service Update,” will be presented tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 11) at 2:30 p.m. (Central). The three-year negotiated service agreement (NSA) authorized between the Postal Service and Valassis provides significant discounts for advertising inserts. If you deliver preprinted inserts, this likely will cost you revenue. The webinar is free to LMA members and $39 for MPA members who are not members of LMA. You can register online at www.localmedia.org. _______________________________________________ -- Contact Congress to fight Valassis deal Missouri Press and other newspaper organizations continue to encourage their members to contact their U.S. senators and representatives and ask them to support legislation to stop the Postal Service's special-rate Valassis deal. The Postal Regulatory Commission has approved the deal, so relief needs to come from Congress. "Talking points" for your calls, from the Newspaper Assn. of American, are attached. The Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Call your representative and both Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill. Missouri Press would like to know how your congress people respond to your calls. Send your reports to dcrews@socket.net. _______________________________________________ -- You need Intelligent Mail Barcodes in January Effective January 2013 newspapers must implement Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) in order to be eligible for automation mailing rates. Sales staffs can improve and reinforce their print and online sales skills using this new web-based media sales program. Current courses include Basic Online, Basic Print and Basic Print and Online with new courses being added in the next several months. LMA formerly was known as Suburban Newspapers of America. The training consists of nine video webinars on topics including needs analysis, product knowledge, terminology, territory management, basic marketing, competitive media, presentation skills, answering objections and closing skills. Upon completion of the nine modules, participants will take a 50-question test that requires a 90% grade or higher to earn certification. Some newspapers have used the certification program to introduce new salespeople to the basic skills they need to be successful. Others have used it as a refresher for experienced salespeople, with many companies requiring their entire sales team to participate and pass the test. The cost of the training is $35 per webinar, per person, with multiple-user discounts available. For more information contact Mark Laskowski, Association Partnership Manager, LMA, at (843) 667-6647 or mark.laskowski@local.media.org. _______________________________________________ -- AG says you may be eligible for antitrust payment The Missouri Attorney General's Office has asked MPA and other associations to notify their members about payments they could receive as the result of an antitrust settlement. If between 1999 and 2006 you bought a TV set, computer monitor or laptop with a flat screen you may be eligible to receive a payment of at least $25. All claims for payment must be made by Dec. 6. To learn about the settlement and how to submit an online claim, visit the AG's website, ago.mo.gov, or the settlement website, LCDclass.com. Claims can be filed easily from the settlement website. The case is: TFT-LCD (Flat Panel) Antitrust Litigation, MDL No. 1827.
