Course Objectives:
1. Understanding the origins and basic methodology of operations research
2. Understanding the application of Operations Research for solving business problems
3. Developing linear programming formulations to represent the managerial problem
4. Solving and analyzing problems using the graphical method of linear programming
5. Solving linear programming problems by the simplex method
6. Formulating and solving special linear programming problems using the transportation and assignment
models
7. Using CPM and PERT for controlling large and complex projects
Course Description:
This course discusses the advanced concepts and principles of quantitative methods for decision
making. Defines the evaluation and application of OR and promotes understanding of using
quantitative models. Provides presentation of decision-milking tools like linear programming,
Transportation and assignment models, and Project Management (CPM, PERT).
Intended Learning Outcomes :
After studying this course the student should be able to:
1. Describe the quantitative analysis approach
2. Understand the application of quantitative analysis in a real situation
3. Understand the basic assumptions and properties of linear programming (LP)
4. Understand the simplex method of LP and solve maximization and minimization problems
5. Structure special LP problems using the transportation and assignment models
6. Use the northwest corner, VAM, MODI, and stepping-stone methods
7. Solve assignment problems with the Hungarian method
8. Understand how to plan, monitor, and control projects with the use of CPM and PERT
