Biology Genetic Technology Research Paper Spring 2015 Objectives: To demonstrate and understanding of the origin of genetics, major concepts of heredity, and patterns that exist. To investigate the capabilities and technologies involved in the studying of genetics, genetic engineering, and the Human Genome Project. Area of interaction: approaches to learning Criteria A, B, : One world, Communication in Science, Your Task: Your assignment is to research an existing genetically engineered product or organism. Use your background knowledge of DNA technology to help guide your research. You will need to consider both the benefits and limitations of the genetic application you are investigating. What you will turn in: 1. A 2 page paper (at least) explaining: a. A description of a product or organism that has been developed using DNA/genetic technology. b. How was this product/organism created? This is where you explain the DNA technology being used. c. Benefits of using this product or organism. d. Drawbacks/limitations of using this product or organism. e. What are some of the possible moral and ethical issues surrounding the use of the product/organism you are investigating? You will be assessed using MYP science rubrics. Ideas for Topics: Here are some ideas but you are welcome to investigate any other GMO that you find that may not be on this list. 1. Cloned extinct animals 2. Nutrient enriched plants (Golden Rice, protein potatoes) 3. Insect or herbicide resistant plants (Corn, Wheat, Canola, Sugar Beets, Potatoes, Soy Beans) 4. Stem Cells 5. Glow in the dark animals (Cats, Fish, Sheep, Pigs) 6. Enviropig 7. Pollution Fighting Plants (Poplar) 8. Cabbage with Scorpion Venom 9. Spider Goats 10. Fast Growing Salmon 11. Plants that produce vaccines 12. Plants that identify landmines 13. Faster Growing Trees 14. Eggs that contain cancer fighting drugs 15. Super carbon capturing plants 16.
