Indian Institute of Science is a premier institution of higher learning in the country and is well known world over for its academic contributions. The institute is situated in the northern part of Bangalore in a sprawling campus of 450 acres. It is well known for its flora with thousands of varieties of trees, plants and flowers. During the past several decades many of the alumni and faculty of this institute led science and technology in the country, created and nurtured other laboratories and scientific institutions & established key industries. CV Raman, HJ Bhabha, Vikram S Sarabhai, JC
Ghosh, MS Thackery, S Bhagavantam, S Dhawan, CNR Rao and scores of them who have played a key role in the scientific and technological progress of our country have been closely associated with the institute.
The Centre for infrastructure, Sustainable
Transportation and Urban Planning (C i STUP) of Indian
Institute of Science (IISc) is established in the year
2009 during the centenary celebrations of Indian
Institute of Science, with inputs from many visionaries, organizations and has plans and road map to be one of the finest centers of advanced research and training in the field of transportation engineering in India and abroad. The Department of Civil Engineering will anchor the M Tech programme.
An M-Tech programme in “ Transportation and
Infrastructure Engineering ”, of 2-year duration [2/3semester coursework + 2-semester thesis work] leading to the degree of Master of Technology.
Separate laboratories for Transportation Planning and
Traffic Engineering, Geoinformatics and Pavement
Engineering are functional with important equipments to provide best laboratory facilities to cater to the needs of the students and researchers. Latest software like
TransCAD, TransCAD for Web, VISSIM, MapInfo,
ALogit are available in the department. Devices such as
Driver Vision Screen Tester, Video Camera, Radar
Gun, GPS are also available. Effort is going on to procure more sophisticated instruments and software to build state-of-art lab facilities.
The courses have been designed so as to lay an equal emphasis on all aspect of transportation engineering – transportation planning and traffic engineering, and pavement engineering, and infrastructure engineering.
The students will have to take up a major project in the second year for developing further understanding in the related field.
