Zoology 1 Course Outline & Expectations

Course Description:

This course encompasses the study of animals that includes characteristics & classification, growth and development, and comparative anatomy. We will also study the habitat, niche and value to mankind of various animals.

Materials: You must have these every day. o 3 ring binder (1 ½” should be large enough) o 5 dividers o Labeled as follows:

 Greeter Presentations

 Unit 1

 Unit 2

 Unit 3

 Unit 4 o Pen with blue or black ink o Pencils

Course Expectations:

1.

BE READY to learn with all necessary equipment. (See above)

2.

BE RESPECTFUL of yourself, others, and your surroundings.

3.

BE RESPONSIBLE for yourself, your work, your friends, and your school.

4.

Be careful when doing lab activities in this class. We will be doing dissections once we get to specific animal phyla. Dissections are a privilege. You MUST act appropriately when doing them.

5.

ALL work must be turned in on time to receive full credit!

6.

Assignments turned in late the day it is due will receive a 10% deduction.

7.

Assignments turned in after the due date will receive a 50% deduction.

8.

Assigned work is due when the bell rings at the start of class.

9.

Cheating will result in a grade of “0.” This includes lab activities.

10.

We will begin each class with a Greeter presentation. Each student will be responsible for one on a rotating basis. Each will be worth 5 points.

11.

Attendance is key to success in every class especially this one. Please make every effort to be in class consistently. Lab activities, especially dissections, can be difficult and time consuming to make up.

12.

All work must be made up in a timely manner. You have the number of days you were absent plus one to make up all work.

Grading:

Scientific Knowledge - 30%

Scientific Application – 50%

Scientific Connections – 10%

Homework – 5 %

Participation – 5%
