All information will remain confidential. Academic Integrity All students at LACC are expected to follow the rules of ethical conduct stated in the Spring 2006 Schedule of Classes (Student Policies, pp. 153-156). Cheating will not be tolerated! Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying on exams, plagiarism, faking or falsifying experimental data, etc. Plagiarism is the act of copying another’s written work and submitting it as your own. Examples of pagiarism include copying another’s lab report, data, and published work. Such actions (which are often illegal in the “real world”) may result in suspension or dismissal from the course and the college. Description of Coursework 1. Laboratory: You may miss ONE LABORATORY period. Missing more than one lab without contacting me and having documentation will result in an automatic fail. YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL LAB WORK in order to pass and handing in the labs at the end doesn’t suffice nor does simply getting a good grade in lecture. Safety goggles will be worn by all students in the laboratory at all times. Students who repeatedly are found not wearing goggles (to protect their eyes) will be are subject to removal from the laboratory for that entire period. Each experiment has a pre-lab assignment. All pre-lab assignments are due prior to the start of each new experiment. Reports are due one week from the date the experiment is completed by the entire class. Late reports will be penalized as follows: 1 If you need help paying for books and other college expenses, call the Financial Aid Office at (323) 953-4000 extension 2025 or see them in Clausen Hall 111A http://www.lacitycollege.edu/stusvcs/finaid/ period to 1 week late, 25%; 1 week to 2 weeks late, 50%; more than 2 weeks late, maximum score is 1 point. No points will be credited to one student for lab work completed by another student. After all, that is cheating! Note that lab lockers will be assigned to each Chemistry 101 student. You will be penalized if your lab space is not cleaned up after finishing labwork or if you mistreat lab equipment. You are responsible for all of the equipment in your locker. You will be charged for any equipment you break or lose. It is best not to share equipment. If you absolutely must share equipment, be sure to return any shared equipment to your locker before you leave for the day. Make sure you have put away all equipment and locked your drawer before leaving!!! All students are required to keep a lab notebook. The notebook for Chem 101 must have carbonless duplicates. You are required to prepare your notebook for data collection prior to coming to class. Your lab instructor will check this. You will record all data directly in your notebook and you will turn in the copies of your data sheets at the end of the experiment. This is part of your lab grade. Notebook policies are described in more detail on the last page. 2. Textbook Homework Problems: Suggested homework will be given at the end of each chapter. These problems will not be collected for grading. You are encouraged to do as many of the suggested problems as possible. There is a strong correlation between doing homework problems and doing well on exams. The more homework you do, the better you will do on the exams. If you are having trouble with the homework, please come to my office hours. 3. Quizzes-Will be given once a week in conference. Low exam grades will also involve bonus quizzes given in conference. Regular quizzes will follow a schedule (which will be handed out regularly) and bonus quizzes will be announced following an exam. Bonus quizzes will always cover material from the previous exam (as an incentive to get you to figure out what you missed and why on each exam) while regular quizzes will cover the current lecture topics. 4. Exams-These will be a mixture of written answer and multiple choice and you will need to bring a scantron to each exam. One periodic table will be provided to allow you to write any equations you might need, however, EVERYTHING MUST BE handwritten, and no additional materials may be used. Anything given in class must be copied onto this periodic table. If you need help paying for books and other college expenses, call the Financial Aid Office at (323) 953-4000 extension 2025 or see them in Clausen Hall 111A http://www.lacitycollege.edu/stusvcs/finaid/ USE OF BOUND LABORATORY NOTEBOOK CHEMISTRY 101 1. Write your name, your instructor's name, course number, ticket number, and lab time on the inside of the front cover. Write your locker number and lock combination on the inside of the front cover as well. 2. Use the space provided on the inside of the front cover to keep a table of contents. 3. Start every experiment on a fresh page. Put the date, experiment # and title of the experiment at the top. 4. BEFORE COMING TO LAB TO START A NEW EXPERIMENT, YOU WILL PREPARE YOUR NOTEBOOK WITH THE FOLLOWING: 5. (a) Purpose: State concisely what the purpose or the objective of the experiment is. (b) Summary of chemicals and equipment: List here all chemicals and equipment to be used in the experiment. Include concentrations for solutions and purities for solids/liquids. (c) Data section: Reserve space for thoroughly recording ALL experimental data, both observational and numerical. For numerical data, prepare data tables. You may reproduce the format used on the report forms in your lab manual. (d) Calculations: Reserve space for writing and performing any numerical calculations required (if any) for the experiment. Remember these rules: (a) NEVER come to lab WITHOUT your PREPARED NOTEBOOK. If your notebook is not prepared ahead of time, there will be a penalty. (b) NEVER tear original pages from your notebook. Only the duplicates are to be removed. (c) NEVER erase any work which is incorrectly recorded. Draw a neat line through the incorrect number/statement and make the new record nearby: 12.36 g (d) 11.36 g black PPT brown PPT NEVER record data on any piece of paper other than your notebook.
