Materials
1. Textbook: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 11th ed., Weir, Hass, and Giordano, Addison
Wesley Publishing Company, 2008. (Available at the Learning Commons for
use). You are required to purchase MyMathLab, a computer software
that gives you access to the online homework that you must do for this course.
Course ID: williams18123. An online textbook is included in MyMathLab

Learning Commons: In case I am unavailable, the TCC Learning Commons (located in
LC 30, www.tcc.fl.edu/learningcommons, 850.201.8193) provides one-stop convenient access to
expanded learning assistance and resources. The Math and Science area offers support in
mathematics and science. Students can work independently or in small groups while having
access to resources including: trained tutors, specialists and learning assistants, videos,
textbooks, calculators, an open-access computer lab and much more.

Smarthinking: Online tutoring service available to TCC students via blackboard (see website).
2. Calculator: A graphing calculator is required. Available at the Learning Commons and
rentable at the TCC Library. Calculators that do symbolic algebra, such as TI
89, TI 92, HP 48, etc. are not allowed. Cell phones cannot be used.
3. ID: A photo ID is required for tests and the final exam.
Prerequisite
In order to remain in this course, the student must have met one of the following four criteria:
i) scored appropriately on the TCC Mathematics placement exam;
ii) passed the TCC courses MAC2140 and MAC2114 with a grade of “C” or better;
iii) passed the TCC course MAC2147 with a grade of “C” or better; or
iv) passed courses equivalent to MAC2140 and MAC2114, or MAC2147 at another college or
university with a grade of “C” or better.
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE ABOVE PREREQUISITE POLICY.
Topics in this course include: limits of functions and continuity; the derivative of a function;

Description techniques of differentiation of algebraic and trigonometric functions; the Mean Value Theorem;
applications of the derivative (relative and absolute extrema, velocity and acceleration, related
rates, curve sketching, differentials); indefinite and definite integrals; the Fundamental Theorem
of Calculus; integration by substitution; approximate integration; applications of the definite
integral (area, volume, work, arc length, and area of a surface of revolution). 5 credit hours.
Policies
Disrespectful behavior toward anyone in the classroom such as tardiness, disruptive talking, cell
phone usage, etc. is not acceptable. Smoking, eating or drinking is not allowed in the
classroom. Please place all trash in the appropriate container.
CLAS
To earn an AA degree, students must demonstrate proficiency in these CLAS skills. This
requirement is met by earning a GPA of 2.5 or higher in your college-level mathematics
courses. Alternative methods of meeting this requirement include scoring at certain levels on
various standardized exams including the SAT, ACT, or CPT. Further details can be obtained at
the Enrollment Services and Student Success Center.

Attendance Success in this course depends on your regular attendance. Students are responsible for
completion of all work assigned in class whether they are present or not.
W Deadline The last day to withdraw is Friday, March 26 (cannot withdraw online). If you are absent,
tardy and/or leave class early more than three times during the semester (for whatever reason)
with a failing test average, you will be administratively withdrawn from class. Do not
automatically assume you have been withdrawn.
Homework Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Completing and understanding your homework is
the best way to study for tests. Your homework/quiz average counts as a test grade.
Quizzes
Tests
Expect a quiz every class day. A zero on a quiz counts as an absence. Your quiz/homework
average counts as a test grade. A few replacement quizzes will be given throughout the
semester, but no make up quizzes. NO EXCEPTIONS!
There will be a total of five tests. The test dates are Tues. Jan. 19, Tues. Feb. 9, Tues. March
2, Tues. March 30, and Tues. April 13. There are no makeup tests. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Your final test grade will help you fill in the grade of a total of one lowest test grade with
exemption of Quiz/HW average.
Final Exam Final exam is on Monday, April 26 from 7:30-9:30am.

Integrity
You are expected to do your own work on exams taken in class. Providing information to
another student or receiving information concerning exam content is considered cheating and
will NOT be tolerated. If this should occur, disciplinary action will take place in one of the
following forms: a zero for the test, being dropped from the course, suspension, or expulsion
from school.

Your grade will be determined by your online homework, tests, and the final exam.

Your Quiz/Homework average counts as one test grade.
