Examples of Past Partnership Activities

Saint Barnabas Health Care System

Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship: Parenting An Athlete was designed by behavioral health specialists, in conjunction with sports medicine and health care professionals from the Saint

Barnabas Health Care System. Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship has been presented to more than 4000 parents, coaches, and sports administrators since its inception in March 2000.

Originally designed to address the growing problem of poor parental behavior at children's sporting events, the program incorporated the President's Challenge to assist parents in gaining a greater understanding of their child's physical activity needs and practice parenting skills while working together toward the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA). Once parents and children completed the 6-week activity program, they could submit their activity logs to the Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship program to receive their PALA award, compliments of the St. Barnabas Health Care System.

DC Healthy Families

DC Healthy Families (DCHF) launched Fit For A Lifetime ; an initiative that focused on health awareness and disease prevention by promoting nutrition and physical activity, as well as the need for regular check-ups and the importance of health insurance. It included several key interventions that targeted youth, specifically adolescents, with the goal of assisting this population in making smart choices about what they eat and drink and their physical activity.

DCHF worked with the DC Public Schools System to bring nutrition education into selected middle and junior high schools. Additionally, all students were encouraged to participate in the President's Challenge Presidential Active Lifestyle Award program. Students were awarded their patches and certificates in year two at an awards ceremony.

Sweat Every Day

The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) of Bloomington, IN launched

Sweat Every Day to encourage all students in the corporation to be physically active each day.

Funded by the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools (FMCCS), Sweat Every

Day had a web page that linked directly to the President's Challenge online tools. Students kept track of their physical activity and earned President's Challenge awards made possible by

FMCCS. The unique program serves as a model for other school corporations and organizations looking for ways to encourage their own students to Sweat Every Day !

The Harlem Globetrotters

The Harlem Globetrotters teamed up with the President's Challenge and the U.S. Department of Education during the team's 2006 North American Tour to promote healthy and fit lifestyles through physical activity and character education. Entering their 80th consecutive season in 2006, the Globetrotters played in nearly 200 cities and visited over 200 elementary schools across the United States and Canada. With the CHEER Challenge the Globetrotters encouraged students to be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day and to earn the

Presidential Active Lifestyle Award.
