PRESS RELEASE
FOR INTERNAL REVIEW
26 AUGUST 2010
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy Pledge Support to our National Heroes
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) will be pledging their support to the
Armed Forces by introducing a 10% ‘Heroes Welcome’ discount in their cafeteria for all service
personnel commencing immediately. In addition a number of on-site partners including Sail Laser,
The Official Test Centre, Quay Therapy and Ocean Motion Physiotherapy are also offering the same
discount.
The Heroes Welcome scheme all started in Scarborough when a few local businesses, now over 500
strong and growing, grouped together in order to offer visiting service personnel special discounts.
The scheme, which has now taken off across England and Scotland, could not be simpler; British
Armed Forces Service Men and Women on production of an identification card will be able to claim a
discount at the Academy. The initiative aims to raise awareness of and support for the Armed Forces
community and highlight the outstanding contribution they make to this country.
The discounts mean that members of the Armed Forces will be able to benefit from reduced rates for
a range of activities such as sailing and windsurfing tuition through to treatments such as sports
massage or physiotherapy. The Academy’s cafeteria is open every day and offers a selection of hot
meals, drinks and snacks making it the perfect place to refuel after a morning on the water or to
simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking views across the bay.
John Tweed, Chief Executive at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, commented,
“We have the utmost respect for the Armed Forces community and we are extremely grateful for the
work our servicemen and women perform for the people of the UK. We’ve introduced the discount to
acknowledge the massive contribution that they make every day both at home and overseas.”
