The OLL Human Concerns committee is collecting boxed
potatoes (mashed, cheesy, scalloped) and shampoo for the food
pantry. They also desperately need toiletries. Please drop off
items in the back of church on any weekend. Thank you.
HR Human Concerns: School supplies are being collected for
children of The Food Pantry clients. You may bring the items to
our two chapels or the Parish Center in Fredonia. Some of the
needed items include: markers, pencils, wide-lined notebooks,
colored pencils, Elmer's glue, glue sticks. For more info you
will find school lists in the various stores.
NEW BAPTISM SCHEDULE: Beginning in September, all
baptisms will be held on third weekend of the month at any of
our Masses. It is the preferred practice to have baptisms during
Mass, especially if both parents are Catholic. If you want a
baptism outside of Mass, arrangements can be made with
Deacon Gerry.
RCIA: If you or someone you know is interested in becoming
Catholic, please contact Deb Hamm. Classes begin in fall.
Would you like to BRING COMMUNION TO THE SICK?
Would you like to take communion to the residents of Gables on
the Pond on Sunday mornings, or to some of our shut-ins? Call
Deb Hamm for more information.

Medinger, Marcia Gehrke, Wilbert & Marguerite Buhler, Gabbi Hicks,

Schmitz, Jerome Sinnen, Jean Depies, Marilyn Mayer, Janet Hogan
Update on Janet Hogan: Janet has been undergoing Chemotherapy
for inoperable, incurable pancreatic cancer, hoping to at least stop it
in its tracks for some time. “I have been tolerating the chemo quite
well, and I thank God everyday for that blessing. I also sleep pretty
well and have been thankful for that too. I am still on oxygen. But
what I really wanted to do is thank everyone for their prayers for
Tom's children and my children. If I have missed anyone with a
thank you note, here is a very big thank you!! I cannot drive at
this point so I do not get to Fredonia very often.
With much appreciation, Janet Hogan

Pastoral Column:
Many of us have felt excluded from time to time. We are judged
by appearance, race, bank account, sex, age, health, intelligence
and many other things. We have all felt judged “unworthy” at
some time in our lives. At times, we may even feel that God has
judged us unworthy as. Perhaps we can all relate to the
Canaanite woman in this story, which can be a bit baffling to
many of us. Jesus’ response to this woman is initially to ignore
her. When he does respond, he is uncharacteristically harsh, and
calls her a dog. What can we make of this exchange?
Just prior to this story, Jesus gives a commentary on Jewish
purity rituals. Jesus tells the crowd that evil comes from the
heart, not from unwashed hands. Then we hear of this Canaanite
asking for help for her daughter. Jesus eventually heals the
daughter because of her mother’s faith. Both of these stories end
in Jesus indicating that the Jewish traditions of purity rituals and
the belief that salvation is only for the Jews are invalid. God’s
salvation is for all humanity. Faith is what is important, not
rituals and devotional practices.
How often do we exclude others from our list of those God
loves? How often do we think we are closer to God if we do the
right actions regardless of the faith behind them (the right
devotions, the right prayers, etc.)? How often do we attend Mass
and sit through the entire hour out of habit with little thought for
what is really happening?
Let us remember that it is our faith that is most important. Let us
live that faith as we reach out to others in need, regardless of
who they are, what they look like or what our society tells us
about their value. Even when we initially judge others, let us
follow Jesus’ example and eventually respond with love and
mercy.
