Media Distribution: Media Mill, iTunes U, & CLA YouTube channel
1. Media Mill (http://mediamill.cla.umn.edu/mediamill/)
What is Media Mill?
Media Mill is a web site where you can archive and distribute audio and video contents. It is
launched and maintained by the CLA Office of Information Technology (CLA-OIT).
Have you ever had to delete an old video project to make space for a new one? Have you ever
struggled to sort through an overwhelming selection of compression options to share your video
with others? Have you ever had to send giant email attachments because you didn't have any other
way to distribute your video? If so, then Media Mill is for you!
What can I do with Media Mill?

You can archive your full-resolution video projects in Media Mill, without any quality loss,
and without a limit on how much content you can add.

You can create compressed copies of your video in Media Mill to share with others.

You can use Media Mill to host your video. Media Mill provides you with a link to your
content that others can watch and download

You can create your own podcast and add contents to it in Media Mill. Media Mill provides
you with a RSS feed URL to your podcast so that people can subscribe to it using any RSS
reader.

You can publish your video to CLA YouTube channel in Media Mill.
What are the examples of using Media Mill?

One department of CLA uploaded a video of candidate professors’ lecture into Media Mill
and provided a link to it so that other faculty who were abroad could watch it.

An instructor uploaded interview videos in Media Mill and showed it to students in a class.
How do I get started?
If you're interested in gaining access, just send an email to mmhelp@cla.umn.edu from a University
of Minnesota e-mail address. For more information, view a handout, ‘How to upload and share your

2. iTunes U
What is iTunes U?
iTunes U is a tailored version of iTunes. It provides the University an opportunity to use Apple’s
iTunes software to privately share content with the University community, as well as a dedicated
presence for public content on iTunes U in the Apple Store. All the content is free and can be
downloaded and played on your computer, iPod, or other portable device
Access-restricted site and Public site
1) The access-restricted iTunes U site is only available with U of M Internet ID. The accessrestricted site will provide the University community with access to audio and video recordings such
as course-related content, faculty lectures, interviews, and events.
2) The University of Minnesota’s public iTunes U site will allow worldwide audience to view and
download the digital contents from campuses.
What can I do with the iTunes U?

Instructors can create their course site in iTunes U and add contents to it (For more
information about this, view handout, ‘Publishing Course Podcasts to iTunes U’).

Students can download and view the course contents.

You can contribute to CLA iTunes U site by adding your content to it (For more information,
view a handout, ‘How to upload and share your media in Media Mill).
What are the example of using iTunes U?

University central IT Office is podcasting talk shows about information technology in an
iTunes U site.

An instructor made a course site in iTunes U and asked student groups to upload their
group projects, which were audio recordings of news.

There is a SPSS training podcast including video tutorials of SPSS in CLA iTunes U.
How do I get started?

To use iTunes U, you must have Apple’s iTunes application loaded on your computer. If
you do not have it, please download it from http://www.apple.com/itunes and install it.

Visit http://itunes.umn.edu/ for more information about iTunes U. You can also log in to the
access-restricted iTunes U site or public iTunes U site in this website.
3. CLA YouTube channel (http://www.YouTube.com/umncla)
What is CLA YouTube channel?
CLA YouTube channel is the official YouTube channel for U of M CLA. In the channel, CLA OIT
collects and shows videos by U of M CLA’s faculty, staff, and students, including class projects.
What can I do with CLA YouTube channel?

You can watch various videos by University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts faculty,
staff, and students, including animations, documentary films, lectures, concerts, class
projects and many more.

You can share your own contents with others in CLA YouTube channel.
How do I get started?

Visit http://www.YouTube.com/umncla and watch videos in the channel.

If you want to publish your contents, you need to upload the media into Media Mill and
share it with CLA YouTube channel in Media Mill (For more information, view a handout,
‘How to upload and share your media in Media Mill’).

