Direct Services and Recipients: We are looking for correction students to volunteer their time running various
programs for the prisoners of the Blue Earth County Jail. Some programs include a relaxation group, gym time, aerobics,
and bingo and/or card tournaments. Duties of this position include working one-on-one and in small groups (no larger
than 9 individuals) with prisoners.
Requirements and/or Restrictions for Service: Volunteers must have no criminal charges pending and/or no court
supervision or suspended sentence. Must complete volunteer orientation. Must be at least 20 years old and have a
willingness to help people. Patience and empathy are a must. Have an open-mind and non-judgmental attitude. Must
have the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be assertive and have the ability to work independently. These positions

however, our key goal is to recruit retired individuals (Non-Traditional Students) to volunteer in our
community. We do, however, offer internships to students of all ages from many of the departments at MSU.

would if applying for a job. We hire interns based on their willingness to work with others, their level of
commitment to the program and the community, and we hold the student accountable for every aspect of their

Direct Services and Recipients: Harry Meyering Center provides residential and support services to adults with
disabilities.
Service-Learners will primarily participate in leisure and recreational activities at one specific
site. Hours of service are generally between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and between
10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. (A few slots may be available during the day-time hours – 9
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and early mornings). Hours may vary slightly depending on the schedule of the people with
whom you will be working at HMC. Hours will take place when HMC staff is present. Volunteers should plan
to come for at least two-hour time slots. Hours must be arranged in advance with the Site Supervisor.
Activities might include crafts, games, walks and exercise, socializing, cooking, art projects, card
making, scrapbooking, music, etc. HMC is always searching for volunteers to teach new skills and hobbies to
the individuals with whom we work.
Requirements and/or Restrictions for Service: May be asked to complete a background check and/or a
mantoux test. Students wishing to complete their Service-Learning experiences with HMC must make
arrangements by February 6th. Students must complete a 1 1/2 hour orientation session prior to beginning their

Direct Services and Recipients: One-on-one, small group, classroom, and computer lab assistant; volunteer
tutors are needed. Tutors work with high school dropouts (mainly for GED preparation), those who are learning
English as a Second Language, or other adults who want to improve their basic skills for employment, personal
satisfaction, or further schooling. The majority of tutoring time is spent in improvement of basic reading,
writing, math skills, and conversation. Students range in ages from nineteen to seventy-five.

services. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the roles of facility employees who provide the

Girls on the Run Program: Girls on the Run is a character- and self-esteen-building program for girls in the
3rd – 8th grades that uses running and physical activity as a means to teach life-skills. The program’s mission is
to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy-living. Volunteers and service-learning
students will serve as volunteer mentors and role-models to Mankato-Area girls, as they co-facilitate the biweekly lessons, guiding the participants through the fun and uplifting 12-week curriculum. The program
participants and mentor coaches celebrate the end of their season by completing a community 5K (3.1 mile)
walk/run event!
Requirements and/or Restrictions for Service: Coaches must possess a true passion for working with youth,
the ability to commit to weekly or bi-weekly sessions for the 12-week program, pass a criminal background
check, and complete a program orientation and training. Both afternoon (3:00 – 4:30 p.m.) and evening (6:00 –
7:30 p.m.) options are available. Coaches DO NOT need to be experienced runners!

Girl’s World Program: The Girl’s World program strives to increase the self-esteem of girls in the 2nd – 4th
grades by guiding them in finding their unique voice and empowering them to use it. Girl’s World provides an
emotionally-safe place for girls to grow, develop, learn, share, lead, be, and truly shine!! Students will mentor
Mankato Area girls in a group-setting once a week from school release until 5:00 p.m. Volunteer mentors help
plan creative and fun activities that coincide with weekly themes, such as: “Girls as Leaders”, “Go Green”, and
“Write On”. Students will engage program participants in original crafts, activities, discussions, and sometimes
dancing!

at least 18 years of age, pass a criminal background check, and complete a program orientation and training.
