Venue visit - Leeds Beckett University

Document title:
Venue visit checklist
Template last updated on 10/10/14 by JC (v2.3).
Document purpose:
This document is to be used when developing collaborative
provision with other parties and provides documentary evidence of
the consideration of resources available to students on this
provision.
Consideration of resources must always be undertaken before a
University course or module is delivered in collaboration with a
partner institution, irrespective of which party is to deliver the
course or the means by which the course is delivered. This
checklist will be reviewed in line with a review of the partnership,
be that institutional recognition/re-recognition or a review of
operational approval. If any additional courses are to be developed
with that partner institution then further consideration is not
required, unless specific facilities or resources are required.
Where a venue visit is required, it must always be undertaken by a
member of staff with appropriate knowledge and experience of the
provision to be delivered. Should specific facilities or resources be
required for the delivery of that provision, a subject specialist must
also undertake the visit.
Any assessment of learning resources must additionally be
undertaken by appropriate colleagues in Information, Media and
Technology Services (IMTS) and/or Libraries and Learning
Innovation (LLI), where appropriate.
Drafting notes:
Here is a link to guidance a document issued by Quality
Assurance Services (QAS):

LEARNING RESOURCES
This section is to be completed by the proposed collaborating body with
assistance from the faculty where required. It must be completed in advance of or
during any venue visit. LLI feedback is also required.
The following questions are designed to
act as a means of forming an overall
picture of library and learning resources
support provided by prospective
collaborating bodies. There are also some
suggestions of the kinds of information
that it may be useful to collate in support
of this. This can be in the form of actual
information recorded in this document;
links to information on the partner’s
website; or perhaps hard copies of leaflets
/ guides / hand-outs provided by the
collaborating body and describing their
resources and services. Does the library
have collections of resources in place
to support the proposed subject area?
 Overall stock profile, including bookstock, journals, Audio Visual materials
etc.
 How up to date are library resources?
 Have collections been built in the
relevant subject area over a number of
years, or is this subject are area new to
the partner at this level?
 What are the plans and funding for
developing resources to meet the
needs of new courses?
 Has the Library received reading lists
for the proposed course(s)?
 Are there sufficient copies of texts, print
and electronic?
 Is there a policy regarding purchase of
multiple copies of texts?
 Are there journals to support the
subject area, print and electronic?
 Are loan categories appropriate to meet
levels of demand?
 Can students place reservations?
What training and support will students
receive in Information [Digital] Literacy
Skills?
 Will the students be offered a Library
induction?
 Is information [digital] literacy skills
training embedded in the curriculum?
 Are there any examples of the type of
information literacy skills sessions
offered to students?
Library Space
 Is there a strategy for meeting different
types of study need?
 Is there space for silent / quiet / group
work? Bookable space?
 How many study spaces?
 Access to teaching space for
information skills teaching, either in the
Library or using other teaching spaces?
6
Library services
 Details of opening hours.
 Opening hours of enquiry services, and
types of services offered.
 Is there an online library management
system to manage circulation,
cataloguing, and acquisitions activities?
Does it include an online catalogue?
 Can students access it remotely?
 If there is more than one campus, can
students place reservations for
materials at other campuses?
 Can students request loans from other
libraries?
 Is the Library a member of a reciprocal
access scheme, i.e. do students have
guest access to other libraries?
 Arrangements for student printing and
photocopying
Library staff
 How many Library staff are there?
What are their roles? What
qualifications do they hold?
 Which Library staff will provide subject

SECTION C (VLE)
This section should be completed for arrangements that rely on a partner’s platform to
deliver the programme, for example franchised delivery, and should be completed by IMTS
based on the information provided by the collaborating body.
This section determines whether the virtual learning environment (VLE) provided by the
proposed collaborating body are comparable to those resources offered by the University
VLE. This section contains details relating to the technical architecture (infrastructure) and
user interface (software resources) and must be completed by the IMTS and LLI
respectively.
If documents are appended to this checklist it is useful to provide a reference to the specific
section of the document that applies.
