See Page 17 for full Report The views expressed in this Newsletter are not necessarily those of the Hampshire Badminton Association Ltd DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE 22nd August 2006 Hampshire Badminton 1 Editor’s email address: janet-doug@tiscali.co.uk As the end of this season is fast approaching, I can’t help but think “where does the time go?” Most Clubs only play to the end of March or have that deadline for league matches. A few go on to the end of April with another few continuing through the summer months, but as a whole, badminton usually takes a summer break. There are of course still a few tournaments to be played. At the time of reading this, the Commonwealth Games will be in full swing, and hopefully, the England players will be going for glory. Our strongest contenders are, of course, Nathan Robertson & Gail Emms the Mixed Doubles, Silver medallists from the last Olympics. They are hot favourites to take the Gold in this event and it will be very disappointing if they don’t. We should of course be medal contenders in all events. Watch out for the new scoring system and don’t forget to write in to the BBC and any other TV stations that transmit the badminton to say how much you enjoy the coverage as this is the only way to get more badminton onto our screens. Our County teams have had a very up and down season. The 1st team is struggling to stay in the ICC Premier A League, and with their last three matches not being played until the week-end of 8th/9th April, it will be some time before we know their fate. The 2nd team is having much more success and may even gain promotion and the 3rd team, with mixed results, should retain their place in their current division. The Veterans’ Over 40’s and Over 65’s ICC teams have both reached the National finals to be played in April. Let’s wish them all GOOD LUCK. Our County tournaments have had good entries with a few even being well over-subscribed. The Radio Solent Tournament is again taking place at the Westgate Centre, on Monday 20th March. If you are not taking part, come along and watch if you can. Although at the time of writing this a large part of the British Isles is covered in snow, let’s hope that we all enjoy a good summer and that our badminton benefits from a recharge of energy for the new season come September. Hampshire Badminton 2 Report of Veteran’s Activities Above are Linda Coombes (left) and Margaret Houlton, joint Veterans’ Co-ordinators, who also ran the Open Tournament. Left are Mary and Ken Milne who have done so much over the years for Veterans Badminton. The veterans started their New Year activities with the Inter-County Championships at Worthing on 7/8 January. The 45’s team of Maria Frew/Moira Hough, Tony Coombes/Steve Royston, Jack Webb/Angela Williams, and Dave Pratt/Debbie Webb started with an 8-0 whitewash of Sussex. This was followed by a 4-4 draw with Kent which went to Hampshire by 23 points. The winning ways continued with a 6-2 win against Berkshire but then they faced an extremely strong Surrey side and managed to win 1 of the 8 sets. They ended their campaign with a 7-1 win against Middlesex to leave them in second place. The 55’s had Linda Coombes/Fiep Brine playing ladies and Bob Collier/Pauline Prior at 1st mixed throughout. Paul Williams was partnered in men’s by Les Dix or Horace Mitchell, and Barbara Henderson at 2 nd mixed by Les or Ted Sharratt. They started with 6-2 wins against Middlesex and Sussex before losing 5-3 to Surrey. Their final game was against an undefeated Kent side which resulted in a 6-2 defeat, and 3rd place out of 5. The 65’s team of Linda Pullen/Rita Lee, Graham Walker/Peter Corbett, and Alan Oakley with Diane Cooper only had 2 matches this year so were playing best of 3 sets each time. They started with a straight forward win against Kent all the matches being won in 2 ends. The ladies had an easy win against the Surrey pair, and the first end went to Hampshire in the other matches before the second ends were lost. As Kent had beaten Surrey 2-1 the supporters knew Hampshire had qualified for the finals but did the players realise? Eventually the men lost and the mixed was won 15-13 in the third so countback wasn’t required to determine the winning county as a 2-1 victory was recorded. The 65’s through to the finals in April again. The 60’s team of Mary Lovell/Margaret Houlton, Gus Gustar/Jim Harding, Mike Parratt/Barbara Gibson and Alan Baker/Vicki Betts started against the strong Kent team and managed to halve the ladies and 2 nd mixed to go down 6-2. This was followed by a 5-3 win against Middlesex but the Sussex game was lost by the same margin before the Surrey game was won 6-2, leaving the team mid-table. The 50’s team only had 3 matches so were playing best of 3 ends each time. Joyce Hood/ Jenny Brindley, Sam Armadass/Teli Mendhir, John and Pauline Davis, Chris Cawthorne/Yvette Hillman started by beating Sussex 3-1. Hampshire Badminton 3 For the next match Yvette and Joyce were switched but the result was 3-1 in favour of Surrey. Reverting to the original team did not bring a change of fortune as they finally went down 3-1 to Kent. The 40’s team of Denise Smith/Linda McCallan, Andy Gudgeon/Keith Young, Martyn Isherwood/Julie Taylor, and Mike Mace/Julie Newbold started with a 5-3 win Surrey, and followed this with a 7-1 win against Sussex and a 6-2 win against Kent. This left the final match against Hertfordshire, neither County having lost and Herts the National winners from last year. Linda /Denise won both ends as they had done all day never having double figures against them. Herts hit back by taking the mens easily and were in the driving seat after taking the first set against Martyn/Julie T and leading 14-3 in the second end. The Hants pair had other ideas and almost managed to take the second end going down by 1 point. Meanwhile Mike/Julie N had gone 7-3 down in the first end and Herts with the points advantage. Again Hants fought back and they took that set without the loss of another point, and knowing they had to win by 15-6 or better only conceded 2 points to give a 4-4 draw, but victory to Hants by 5 points. They join the 65’s in the final. The league matches have also continued. The 40’s team of Denise/Linda, Julie T/Julie N, Dave Pratt/Jack Webb and Martyn/Peter Seward were too strong for Sussex winning 11-1. Then the match against Kent that they needed to win to stay on course to win the league. Linda/Denise won both their ladies while JulieT and Tracy Taylor had a long 3-setter to beat the Kent 1st pair having lost to the 2nds. Dave/Jack also took both while Peter/Keith held on to win their long 3 rd end against the 1st pair to go into the mixed 7-1 up. All the mixed went to Hampshire for an 11-1 win. The 55’s team travelled to Middlesex. Paul/Alan Dixon and Bob/Horace found the opposition too good but Linda/Fiep won both and Ann Vestergaard/Pat Brainwood took one to keep the score to 5-3 down after the levels. However Middlesex were too strong in the mixed with only Alan/Ann taking 4th for Hants in the 84 defeat. Sussex were the next opposition, and this time Bob/Eddie Karnecki and Paul/Horace both had one win as did Linda/Fiep while Pauline Prior/Moya Abbott won both. While Paul/Linda lost Bob/Pauline won so still all to play for going into the final 2 games. Eddie/Fiep won to get the 7 th game and the 7-5 win. The 60’s team of Alan/Mike, Jim/Ian Pike, Barbara/Mary, and Vicki/Diane Cooper travelled to Kent. The ladies both beat the 2nd ladies pair in the 10-2 defeat. The 65’s team of Graham, Peter, Alan, Linda, Rita and Diane had a long trip to Essex. The men took all their games while the ladies took 2 of theirs. The mixed went to Hampshire to give an 8-1 win. The 45’s team of Steve/Tony, Emerson Cumberbatch/Chris Manners, Angela/Debbie, Maria/Sue Moody did not fare so well when they travelled to Essex, going down without winning a match. The 50’s team of Pauline/Pat Brainwood, Joyce/Jenny, John/Sam and Andrew Mears/Paul Collins have had an 11-1 win against Sussex. The Open Tournament built on the success of last year with many new faces appearing in all the age groups and 17 counties were represented. Extra court time had to be booked to give everyone at least 3 best of 3 set matches although some age groups needed combining. 15 mens pairs contested 3 age groups, 14 ladies pairs gave 3 age groups for the first time, and 23 mixed pairs were in 4 age groups, the 40’s needing 2 sections and subsequent play-offs. The winners of the sections were Mens 40 and over David Pratt and Jack Webb (Hampshire) 45 and over Chris Hockey (Surrey) and Derek Simmons (Avon) 55 and over John Whalebone and Dave Spurgeon (Essex) Ladies 40 and over Natalie Pipe (Surrey) and Tracy Taylor (Hampshire) 45 and over Jenny Cox and Christina Davies (Surrey) 55 and over Janet Fletcher and Patricia Hanson (Derbyshire) Hampshire Badminton 4 Mixed 40 and over Martyn Isherwood (Hampshire) and Debbie Miller (Berks) beat David Pratt and Tracy Taylor (Hampshire) in the final 40 and over Winners Martyn Isherwood and Debbie Miller (right) with runners-up Tracy Taylor and David Pratt 45 and over 55 and over 60 and over INDIVIDUAL HONOURS Nigel Maryan (Wiltshire) and Janet Williams (Surrey) Jim Garrett and Rena Jones (Kent) Ray Sharp and Sue Whetnall (Kent) Jack Webb was in the England team to play Scotland and duly won his 45’s singles game before going on to win the Scottish singles 45’s title. Linda McCallan and Debbie Miller took the 40’s ladies title at the West of England tournament. No. 01962 869443 Hampshire Badminton 5 THE ENGLISH NATIONALS 2006 Report by Hampshire’s roving reporter Hampshire was well represented at this year’s Nationals. In an entry of 31 players for the Men’s Singles, Hampshire accounted for 7 of them, but as to be expected with a tournament of this quality all the matches would prove to be tough. Young star Bruce Peake went down to the experienced Danny Plant (Essex) 6/15 1/15 David Shawley lost to the No.4 seed and eventual semi-finalist Rajiv Ouseph (Middx) 3/15 4/15 Martin Ventham lost to the nutritionalist Alan Clarkson (Lancs) 10/15 2/15, putting up a good fight in the first set but running out of steam in the second. Paul Butler lost to the dynamic Neil White (Notts) 3/15 2/15 Stephen Perkins looked able to take the second set against Chris Adcock (Notts) but sadly missed out in a 2/15 10/15 score line. Mark Ashton found himself in a battle in the first round against a young Surrey lad, but fortunately Mark had enough to take the third end and win the match 15/12 10/15 17/14. Mark’s opponent in the 2nd round was Andrew Smith, another Hampshire player, who had beaten Simon Woodhouse 15/0 15/2 in the first round. Andrew had too much experience and class for Mark and took the match 15/3 15/3 to book his place in the quarter-finals against Rajiv Ouseph, a rematch from the previous year. Although Smith was amazing at times, Ouseph had a touch more consistency on the day and emerged the winner 15/11 15/10. Disappointment for the Hampshire contingent watching who knew the quality of Smith and had been hoping that this was the year he could have taken the title. However, it was not to be – roll on next year. Hannah Littlecott was Hampshire’s sole entrant in the Ladies’ Singles after the withdrawal of Jo Dix due to an injured wrist. Unfortunately the draw had not been kind to Hannah and she found herself up against the No. 1 seed and eventual winner Tracey Hallam. Hannah put in a spirited performance, one underlying her future potential, however Hallam’s experience proved decisive in winning 15/0 15/1. Hannah has improved greatly in the last two years so hopefully this improvement will continue and take her on to bigger things and better results in the coming years. In the Men’s Doubles competition, young Bruce Peake partnering Max Gardner (Surrey) had the unenviable draw against non-seeded Foster & Trueman (Yorks). The Yorkshire pair, sadly for us, came out the winners 15/4 15/9 and eventually progressed to the semis, but Bruce and Max acquitted themselves well. More mature County players, David Shawley and Jamie Russell, had been dealt a cruel hand in having to face 6 times National Champions Chris Hunt and his young Lancashire partner Tom Dunlop. Although losing 4/15 7/15, both competed well, thoroughly enjoying the game and competing with their opponents on an even keel in the early part of the second set. The other Hampshire entrant Chris Evans, was due to play with the injured Mark Burgess but found himself playing with the ex-Hampshire star Graham Hurrell, now with Dorset. A tough first round against U19 England pair Dean George and Andrew Ellis saw them come back from 4-11 down in the third set to eventually take the set 15/12 and the match 15/9 11/15 15/12. In the second round they faced a reserve Cheshire pair, beating them 15/12 15/7 to line up a quarter-final match against the No. 3 seeds and England pairing of Ian Palethorpe and Kristian Roebuck. Nerves seemed to get the better of Evans and they were comprehensively beaten 4/15 1/15. Kathryn Gittins was Hampshire’s only representative in the Ladies’ Doubles event. Playing with Vicki Ingram (Staffs) and after losing the first set 15-2 she put a lot of hard work in at the back of the court in the second only to lose it 8/15 and with it the match. It was great to see Kathryn taking part but it was a pity that there were no other Hampshire ladies competing in this event. The Mixed Doubles event saw one and a half pairs competing for Hampshire. First team player Sarah Burgess was due to play with her brother Mark, ex-Hants, but an injury picked up in Devon meant he was unable to compete and so Sarah teamed up with Adam Smith (Avon). Facing the highly talented Dean George and Liza Parker (Herts) they went down 5/15 9/15. Another pair having a tough draw was Chris Evans & Kathryn Gittins. They had to play Ed Foster (Yorks) and Mariana Agathangalou (Jersey) and although the Hampshire pairing led for most of the first set were unable to get those last vital points and went down 12/15. The opposition closed out the match, taking the set considerably easier by 15/4. A good performance from Bruce Peake and a quarter final place two years running for Chris Evans, so a decent performance from the Hampshire players but obviously much more room for improvement and plenty of space in the draw for more Hampshire players. It was good to hear that Hampshire was represented in this major English tournament but a few more ladies need to enter. The draw is always going to be tough but it does gives players a chance to pit their skills against the best in English badminton. EDITOR Hampshire Badminton 8 Hampshire Badminton 9 County Development Officer’s Update The last 6 months have been spent familiarising myself with Hampshire badminton, learning what is happening at the moment, what people would like to happen and what resources Hampshire has. From what I have seen, Hampshire is very lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers and coaches and to also have the excellent facilities it benefits from. On one busy Saturday I spent the morning watching the Hampshire Open, which was excellently organized and it was fantastic to see so many good players competing. In the afternoon I travelled to Highbury College to see young players from across Hampshire playing in a North versus South match, again excellently organized and a joy to see so many young players with talent. Another pleasing aspect has been the many phone calls from schools and leisure centres looking for coaches to run clubs, school sessions and tournaments. I have been endeavoring to work my way around the county visiting as many clubs as possible, starting with Milton Nomadic, Fleet Falcons, Bishops Waltham, Romsey, Wyvern Dragons, Oaklands and Alma Mater. Each club has its very strong points, but it is particularly pleasing to see juniors being encouraged through by these clubs. Below I have put an update of current programs and initiatives which I would encourage all clubs to consider. As always, I am more than happy to help, please contact me if there is anything I can do on the details below Return to Sport: As part of the drive to get everybody more active, Hampshire County Council have been allocated funding by Sport England to run a ‘Return to Sport’ project encouraging adults to take up regular physical activity. Badminton has fortunately been selected as one of the six sports taking part in the project (the others are swimming, netball, football, touch rugby and jogging). The funding will cover coaching costs, facility hire, publicity and equipment for approximately ten courses a year. So what does this mean for your club? Basically, there is funding available to run 10 or 6 week ‘Return to Sport’ courses in Hampshire. The courses will be aimed at those 16+ who have either never played badminton or who haven’t played for many years. Qualified coaches will run the sessions, developing the participant’s skills, and motivate them so that once the course ends they would like to join a badminton club. This is where you come in, these new, enthusiastic participants will be looking for clubs who are willing to take on those who may not be Gail or Nathan quite yet but will add to the club members, and hopefully play competitive badminton as their skills develop. I am looking for clubs who will make potential new members, whatever their skill level, feel welcomed. So does your club have a coach who could run the course and then introduce the participants to the club? Or do you need new members and could run a course either alongside or just before your club night to introduce the participants to the existing club members? Could you provide a welcoming, open environment for players who have just returned to the sport? Please contact me if your club needs new members. Unfortunately as this is a Hampshire County Council project, Southampton and Portsmouth clubs are not eligible, but if you wish to run a course there are many funding streams out there who support this type of work in these areas. Hampshire Badminton 10 Clubmark: We currently have 10 clubs registered on the Clubmark scheme, with 5 clubs actively working towards achieving the award. Milton Nomadic have already gained the Bronze award and are now completing those final steps to get the Silver award. For an example of the benefits Clubmark can bring, Portsmouth City Council’s grant scheme usually covers a maximum off 50% of a project’s costs, but Clubmark clubs can access a maximum of 70% of the costs. This will be echoed in facility hire rates over the coming years. Please do contact me if you are considering Clubmark at all, many clubs find that they fulfill much of the Clubmark criteria already. Junior Clubs: As part of the recent audit carried out, a lack of competitive opportunities for youngsters who play within clubs but not at county level has been identified. Therefore from September 06, I will be running a Junior Club league, all affiliated junior clubs should have received a letter about this, but if your club has a junior section and would like to enter the league please contact me. Finally, not wanting to finish on a worrying note, Yonex have increased their shuttle prices by up to 25% recently, with other manufacturers soon to follow suit. This will have a major effect on the future of those clubs who play with feathers and I would urge you to think about the financial future of your club. Can you absorb these higher costs given your present membership? Please contact me sooner rather than later if you are concerned about the future of your club, there are things that we can do to help the situation, if we have enough time. Hampshire Badminton 12 HAMPSHIRE RESTRICTED U11 & U15 TOURNAMENTS SATURDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2006 Last year, as an experiment, it had been decided to play the two age-groups on the same day. It was such a success that we shall did it all over again this year. The fact that Badminton England wanted us to have a dedicated Junior Restricted weekend this season was purely coincidental! U11 Events Last year only seven boys and two girls entered for the U11 singles events, but this year there were eleven boys and four girls in the singles events and a further pair of boys joined in for the doubles. Some of the competitors were under nine, some found it really hard going and there were a few tears. But they all showed a real desire to win and no little skill. After two groups of 5/6 boys and one group of the 4 girls had fought out the round robin part of the singles competitions, the top two players in each group went into a knock-out competition to determine the overall winners. With only two pairs of girls, it was decided to put them into one big group with the four pairs of boys - and the girls held their own very well. In fact, Victoria Williams and Sarah Stannett very nearly won the whole group, losing just one game, against Kelvin and Nicholas by the narrow Hampshire Badminton 13 margin of 15-13. The leading two boys’ pairs then played each other in a final as did the girls’ pairs, to provide winners for each sex. Congratulations to all the players on their patience and good time keeping on what was a very busy day “at the table”. As an experiment Counties were encouraged by Badminton England to run Restricted Junior Tournaments over one weekend this season rather than on four separate Sundays. This was done to allow more Sundays free for matches, training etc. The age groups were divided in order to give players a chance to play “up” if they wished to do so. As luck would have it (Murphy’s Law I believe it is called) we had the largest entry at U13 and U17 level we have had for several seasons. This resulted in having to play smaller groups and fewer games than we would have wished on Sunday. The Tournament Committee will review this at their next meeting, taking on board feedback received on the day. U13 and U17 Reports by Jan Harvey – Tournament Secretary Hampshire Badminton 18 Basingstoke Restricted Tournament Sunday 12th February 2006 The Ian Dewar sponsored Restricted Tournament at the Sports Centre on Sunday kept the five courts fully occupied for some seven hours.
