North Carolina SCOS and 21st century skills: NC SCOS: 6.1: Explain how new ideas and theories of the universe altered political thought and affected economic and social conditions. 21st Century: Global Awareness- learning from and working collaboratively with individuals representing diverse cultures, religious and lifestyles in a spirit of mutual respect and open dialogue in personal, work, and community contexts; understanding other nations and cultures, including the use of non-English languages. : Initiative and Self-Direction- set goals with tangible and intangible success criteria; utilize time and manage workload efficiently. Materials: Primary Sources (listed below) 2 iPads for groups to watch videos SlideRocket presentation Initiatory Activity (aka Bellringer, Do-Now, Anticipatory Set) When students enter my class, they will look at the painting An Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby and respond to the following questions in their bellringer journals: 1) What do you see in this image? 2) This was painted in 1768. Given our discussion of Enlightenment ideas and the Scientific Revolution, what do you think the artist was trying to say? Strategies (What methods are you going to use to teach? Please include a detailed description, step-by-step in numerical order, of the instructional approaches/teaching strategies that you will use. What will you and the students be doing in this lesson? How long will each activity take?) Time Activity 5 minutes Bellringer (timed) 5 minutes Go over bellringer and do brief review of enlightenment ideas/philosophers. 25 minutes Interactive lecture: talk about and show samples of art, music, literature from the period. SlideRocket presentation attached. 35 minutes Break students into 5 groups of 5. I will have 5 different primary sources posted around the room. I will provide a description of each work/artist. Students will quickly SCIM-C each source. They will be required to plan it out before they start working on it. If they do not finish in class, they will finish for homework and turn it in within two class periods. 5 minutes Closing Question Instructional Activities with accommodations for English Language Learners and Exceptional Children… I will provide scaffolded sheets for the ELL student and the student with dyslexia. The students will not be in the same group for learning stations. Ending of class (How will you conclude class?) When class ends, students will complete the following in their “Closing Questions” journal: 1) Briefly describe your Enlightenment product. Assessment (How will you know students achieved the objectives?) Students will be assessed through their Enlightenment product. Assessment with accommodations for English Language Learners and Exceptional Children: Students can use pictures/images to convey their knowledge of Enlightenment concepts. Alternate strategies for re-teaching material for students who did not achieve mastery… Students will be given a review sheet with major bulleted points about the period. Transition (How will this relate to the next day’s lesson?) This relates to tomorrow… The changing cultural aspect of the Enlightenment influences how ideas are passed around throughout Europe and across the Atlantic.
