Artist: Duane Hanson American, 1925-1996 Duane Hanson was born in Alexandria, Minnesota in January 17, 1925. He played the piano and violin, wrote poems and plays at a very early age. He grew up to be a teacher and a great artist. He was influenced by a German artist named, George Grygo. Grygo introduced Hanson to polyester resin and fiberglass as sculptural media. Pop artist, George Segal, also influenced him. Duane Hanson was diagnosed with cancer in 1971, a result of his work with resin. In January 1996, at the age of 70, he died after a 25 year battle against cancer. Style: Pop-Art influenced sculptures - Photorealist Sculptor His subjects usually were from his own neighborhood and from middle-class America. The subjects of his sculptures became those people he observed going about their daily routines such as shoppers, readers, sunbathers, flea market vendors, and museum guards. Art work: Supermarket Shopper, 1970, Polyester resin and fiberglass in oil, with clothing and wig, steel cart, and groceries, life-size. This was the first of his Pop-Art influenced sculptures. This sculpture pokes fun at consumerism. Somewhat less obvious is the question of why this woman seems lacking in common sense and personal pride. Hanson describes the sculpture as “a symbol of the overconsuming housewife pushing a cart filled with every imaginable item she could buy.” Media and Technique: Polyester resin and fiberglass in oil, with clothing and wig, steel cart, and groceries, life-size. He used real models and liquid silicone rubber to create a mold to make the sculptures.
