Courses available for incoming X-change students at HU Business School Utrecht 2013 EC-2014 As an exchange student from a partner university, you are warmly invited to spend a semester or a whole year at Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied Sciences with a tuition fee waiver. Courses and how to make your choice You can participate in various blocks or semesters in our 4 year English taught Bachelor programmes or in any of our international minors within these Bachelor programmes; Bachelor of Business Economics (BE); Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA); Bachelor of Commerce (BComm). Please note that all courses reflect a (logical) bundle of subjects (and should normally be followed as such); it is not possible to combine (2 or more) bundles in one single period. In choosing the course and level of your study programme with us, we advise you to seriously and realistically consider your knowledge and expertise in the subject area and to make sure that you meet relevant pre-requisites. Please do not hesitate to contact us in case of doubt; we will be happy to advise you and/or to bring you in contact with the programme/course manager (io@hu.nl). Please see the attached table listing the courses available in the coming academic year. As the academic periods (we call them ‘terms’ -2 terms make up a semester, a year is 4 terms-) are very intensive (only 10 weeks including exams), you are strongly advised (and in some cases also required) to attend classes from the first day on. If the academic calendar of your home university would not allow you to start your academic activities with us in the week of 1 September (fall semester) or in the week of 1 February (spring semester), please reconsider if HU would be the right place for your Study Abroad. Application We would be happy to receive your application for these courses on 1 June, at the latest. As for some courses demand is higher than the number of available places, we request you to also provide us with a 2nd selection for your course(s) of choice on the application form (and where applicable also your choice of electives). This is mandatory; we will not process incomplete applications…….. Your English language ability As studying with HU (and in The Netherlands in general) requires interactive skills of all students, a sufficient level of academic English is a condition for academic success in the English taught courses and programmes. Although an overall score of B2 or higher (Common European Framework) would meet the requirements we ask of regular students and would be a good starting point, students scoring B1 on all aspects should normally also be able to actively and successfully participate in the courses offered for exchange students at HU. 1 If your English language ability proves to be insufficient to participate actively in (parts of) the courses you have chosen, we cannot be bound to the Learning Agreement, neither can we guarantee to offer you a required amount of Study load (EC’s); For specific courses within some programmes, a certain level of English (minimum B1) is required (for reasons of interactivity), and the teachers might request you to take (another) diagnostic test at the start of the course to check if your English language ability is sufficient to successfully participate in that specific course.. If you have already done a diagnostic test, you are advised to take the results with you to Utrecht. In all cases it is up to the programme manager, to decide if your English language ability is sufficient to be eligible for a programme/course; Applicants scoring ‘A2’ or lower, are strongly advised to reconsider their destination of choice. In order to optimize your chances for academic success while studying at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, we gladly offer you the possibility to test your English language ability in line with the Common European Framework** with the free online Dialang test (an EU initiative). On completing all stages of the Dialang test (starting with the ‘placement test’) you will be able to make a sound decision on necessary and relevant preparations for your study abroad period with us. How to use DIALANG To use DIALANG, you first download the client software, and then you install it on your PC. You can download the DIALANG client software zip file (2.8 Mbytes) by clicking here. You may also need to download the Java JRE which is available from the Java website. Then you start the client software and this uses the Internet to connect to the DIALANG Test Server (different from the website server). After installation, you start the client software (by clicking the DIALANG icon, in start/all programmes) and it connects to the DIALANG Test Server via the internet to run the tests (Dialang runs well with the Mozilla Firefox internet browser). Sometimes it is necessary to try (click the icon) several times - before your computer makes a first connection to the DIALANG Test Server. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us (io@hu.nl). ** The self-assessment grid can be consulted on the website of the Council of Europe http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/LanguageSelfAssessmentGrid/en 2 Students coming as a regular X-change student can choose from: 1/4 First semester, September -January (20 weeks) Degree Programme BE Course Year Modules in the course Code Intercultural Business 3 IBE-Y3 EC-SEM1A International Business Economics BE 15 ECTS 10 weeks (Sept-November) Running an international company Corporate Behaviour (3 EC), Project Intercultural Business**(6) International Marketing (3 EC), International Strategic Management (3 EC) Course guides Simulation Intopia**(6), Advanced Accounting (3 EC), International Taxation (3 EC), International Business Law (3 EC), International Business Economics BComm International Marketing Management BComm International Marketing Management 15 ECTS 10 weeks (Nov-January) International Marketing & Sales A 15 ECTS 10 weeks (Sept-November) International Marketing & Sales B 15 ECTS 10 weeks (Nov-January) 3 2 Course guides Sales and Account Management (5 EC), Global Marketing 2 (5 EC), Business Language I (5 EC) ( German, Spanish, French or Dutch for Beginners A1), IBE-Y3 EC-SEM1B IMM-Y2-SEM1A Instead of the Business Language (5 EC), you can choose electives for a max of 5 EC .
