SUMMER READING REQUIREMENT for FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES-
JUNIORS-SENIORS
Dear Parents/Guardians and Rising Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores & Freshmen,
Summer reading is required by the English Department. It is an essential part of the curriculum and of each student's education. Completion of the summer reading is evaluated when the student returns to school in August, and it constitutes a significant part of the student's first quarter grade in all English classes. Please be responsible for seeing that this requirement is met.
Used books may be purchased from older students, or used book sellers (bookstore or online), or obtained from the public library. Taking notes as you read is strongly encouraged in order to review before summer reading tests.

These novels may be obtained used from graduating AP students or a used bookstore or website, or new through any regular or online bookstore, or from the public library.
There will be reading tests on all three novels during the first two weeks of school, after you have had an opportunity to ask questions and discuss them. Do not even think of substituting
Cliff’s Notes or Spark Notes
for your reading because you will be miserable if you do. All three of these novels will be used during the year, as the basis of papers, discussions and A.P. practice questions.
Taking notes as you read is strongly encouraged in order to review before summer reading tests.
If you do not/cannot pass all three tests on the summer reading books, you may be asked to transfer out of A.P. English.
