Overview of Spanish 3- The basic foundation is completed this year. Reading and writing skills are
further developed toward greater mastery of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Oral communication skills
are strengthened, cultural topics are studied through both literature and audio/visual materials, and advanced
reading material is added. Students will take the equivalent of the Spanish Regents Exam in June.
Texts and Materials: The text used is Ven Conmigo 3, Holt Spanish. Students should have a Spanish to
English dictionary and a copy of Barron’s “501 Spanish Verbs.” Students need to come to class every day with
their dictionary, a three ring binder, loose leaf paper , an agenda book and at least four pens / pencils.
Class Rules:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Speak only when called on unless you are instructed otherwise.
Have good attendance and get to class on time
Be in your seat working on the “Hagan Ahora” (Do Now) when the bell rings.
Come to class prepared every day with: a positive attitude, your textbook, several pens and pencils,
loose-leaf paper, and your Spanish notebook.
5. Listen carefully and follow directions Mr. Starace gives you.
6. No cursing, sleeping, eating, wearing hats, do-rags, using electronic devices or having headphones in
your ears.
7. Avoid any disruptive behavior that will distract students from the lesson.
Serious consequences will result from not following class rules.
Code of Conduct:


I will be enforcing the school “Code of Conduct and Attendance Policy” in my class. I expect you to be
familiar with them and follow them.
Cheating of any kind will result in a zero for the assignment as well as a phone call home.
Attendance:






According to the district attendance policy, if you have 6 absences per marking period, you will fail the
marking period. If you have 24 absences for the year, you will fail the course regardless of your
performance when you are present.
Good attendance is crucial in order to do well in this class.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make sure you get the notes and work from me after class or
after school or from another student. You should get another classmate’s phone number for this purpose.
I can give you the missed work, but I usually do not have time to do so in class. If I do not have time in
class, it is your responsibility to see me outside of class. I encourage you to e-mail me as needed.
Students are responsible for making sure they take missed quizzes and tests. Make up work is allowed only
when an absence is officially excused. You must complete all missed work within one week of being absent
or you will receive a zero for missed work.
Students are expected to make appointments to see guidance counselors and other teachers during their free
time, not during Spanish class.
Class Website: WWW.srstarace.info This site will be used for class assignments as well as for extra
help. I’ll be adding more content to it specific to our class as the year progresses, and I’ll announce it at that
time.

Homework will be assigned and checked at the beginning of class several times per week. On occasion, I
will collect it to look at it closely and grade it.
Have your homework on your desk for me to check while you are doing the “Hagan Ahora” (Do Now).
Homework must be on loose-leaf paper (no torn sheets or “fuzzy ends!”)
Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise noted.
No late homework will be accepted unless you were officially excused, however I will drop the lowest two
homework grades every marking period.
Classwork may be collected and graded.
Quizzes, Tests and Projects:







Quizzes and tests will normally be announced, but a quiz may occasionally be given unannounced.
If you were absent during a test or quiz you must see me immediately to schedule to take it after school as
soon as possible. If you don’t take it within one week you will receive a zero.
Quizzes and tests that you missed due to cutting will result in a zero.
A test or quiz will be given approximately once a week.
Projects will usually count as a test.
Students who enter class without a valid pass after a quiz/test has begun will not be given extra time.
If you fail a quiz or a test, you should meet with me immediately for extra help. You have one week
following the return of the test or quiz in which to retake it. You will only receive a passing grade (65).
