Preamble
This policy outlines the method and procedures required for the Drug Toxicology
Screening for all House Staff in training, prior to employment.
II.
Definitions
A. GME – Office of Graduate Medical Education
B. EHS – Employee Health Services
C. BHS – Bellevue Hospital Center
III. Policy
A. All House Staff must take and pass a (10) drug screen urine toxicology test as part of
the clearance process to begin training in any NYU sponsored program. The NYC
Health and Hospital Corporation and NYU School of Medicine will utilize the services
of any Quest Diagnostics Collection depot (or alternate facility) for the ten (10) drug
screen, as part of the procedure for processing test results for employment.
B. It is the responsibility of the GME to credential incoming house staff.
A negative
toxicology test is one of the things required to achieve clearance to begin training.
IV. Procedures
A. The pre-employment Drug Toxicology screening is applicable to ALL incoming
House Staff. House Staff will be required to undergo and pass a drug test prior to
beginning training/working.

B. The Residents/Fellows are instructed to go to the designated collection depot to
provide a urine specimen, following the procedure as directed by collection depot
staff.
C. The results will be forwarded to the Director of Employee Health Service at Bellevue
Hospital for review.
D. If a positive result is confirmed after review by the NYUSoM DIO from host institution
and the Director of BHS EHS, it will result in a loss of the training position.
