6th Sunday of Easter – May 13, 2012 Give Your Life for Them Gospel Summary - A complete circle of love is found in this gospel reading. God loved the Son, Jesus. The Son loves his followers, and the followers show their love for God through their love for one another. It is clear in this reading that while we are part of this circle, we are only part of it because God chose us to be. Our response to God’s choice for us is simply to show our love for God through the love we show to other human beings. Bringing the Gospel into Your Family - Jesus asks us to love one another as he has loved us. It’s easy to love those who love us, but what about the hard part of this command? How do we show love to the person that does not show us love? Think about who those people are in the lives of your family members. Allow each person to offer suggestions about how they will show Jesus’ love to the person that is difficult for them to love. HUGHES AS HE CELEBRATES HIS 60TH ANNIVERSARY ON MAY 10TH We invite the parish family and friends to join us today after the 10 AM Mass to honor Father Jim and to share some refreshments in the Church Hall. Father pastored us for 19 years and was responsible for building three additions to our wonderful school because he believed in the Catholic formation of our children as well as a parish center where we can play and socialize. THE BEAUTIFUL HANDS OF A PRIEST We need them in life's early morning, We need them again at its close; We feel their warm clasp of true friendship, We seek it while tasting life's woes. When we come to this world we are sinful, The greatest as well as the least. And the hands that make us pure as angels Are the beautiful hands of a priest. At the altar each day we behold them, And the hands of a king on his throne Are not equal to them in their greatness Their dignity stands alone. For there in the stillness of morning Ere the sun has emerged from the east, There God rests between the pure fingers Of the beautiful hands of a priest. When we are tempted and wander To pathways of shame and sin 'Tis the hand of a priest that absolve us. Not once but again and again. And when we are taking life's partner Other hands may prepare us a feast But the hands that will bless and unite us, Are the beautiful hands of a priest. Go to www.mysignup.com/smmihn to help. New volunteers are always welcome! Stop in to see the joy and blessing we are to these families, our brothers and sisters. -SMM0035 1 God bless them and keep them all holy, For the Host which their fingers caress, What can a poor sinner do better Than to ask Him who chose them to bless When the death dews on our lids are falling, May our courage and strength be increased By seeing raised o'er us in blessing The beautiful hands of a priest. face. “Chev,” as he was affectionately known, had one of the biggest hearts and a zest for life that was unparalled. His motto was “Do what you do.” Regardless of your age, gender, or position in life, you were unique to him and he made you feel special, important and loved. He always encouraged everyone to strive to do their best in life and become the person God intended them to be. He cared about everyone in his life, no matter what their circumstances were. A BLESSED MOTHERS DAY TO OUR MOMS, GRANDMOMS AND GODMOTHERS As we honor our Mothers today, we ask our Blessed Mother to help them be a role model of faith, hope and divine sacrificial love. We praise God and thank them for always saying Yes to Jesus and empowering us with the grace and guidance of the Holy Spirit so that we all believe that we are precious children of God. Sometimes it is very difficult to give up “control” and ask God to take care of everything, to take over for us, but that is exactly what he wants us to do. It is in this asking that He takes us by the hand and leads us. He knows the road we should walk down and He will guide us. We miss Michael deeply and God weeps with us, just as he did for Lazarus. Michael walks with God now. Our family will never forget all of the love, kindness, caring, compassion and understanding that all of you, our friends and parish family, have shown to us. Michael always would say to us: “You have no idea how many friends I have.” He was right. The outpouring of love was evident through those first couple of days, and has continued up to the present. Some of you knew Michael as a baby, some as a student at SMM school, others through high school and college and some of you barely knew him and yet you gave so unselfishly of yourselves. Through all of your countless words of comfort, phone calls and messages of love and support, endless cards delivered to our home on a weekly basis, flower arrangements sent during holidays or other special times of the year, our grief has been cushioned and embraced by a network of God’s faithful servants. Never underestimate how your words, or even a simple touch or smile, can bring comfort. It is an affirmation of Michael’s life and we welcome them! We can honor them best by passing on the gift of divine life, love and faith to our children and give them the humility and self-confidence to become men and women blessed with compassionate hearts and caring hands. I SAID A MOTHER’S PRAYER FOR YOU I said a Mother’s Day prayer for you to thank the Lord above for blessing me with a lifetime of your tenderhearted love. I thanked God for the caring you’ve shown me through the years, for the closeness we’ve enjoyed in time of laughter and of tears. And so, I thank you from the heart for all you’ve done for me and I bless the Lord for giving me the best mother there could be! ROSARY PAMPHLETS AVAILABLE FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN in parish offices. Dear Friends of St. Mary Magdalen May 14th will mark the one year anniversary of our son Michael’s journey home to the Lord. As you can imagine, our lives were shattered on that day and the process of now going through life without him is, at times, overwhelming and unimaginable. God places people in our lives for a reason and simply by them being themselves, we become better people. They touch our hearts and our spirits. Michael was such a person. Michael was a gift in our lives for 23 years, and treasuring each and every memory is its own precious bead on our rosary. Pray for him and to him, as he is listening in a way that only he is now capable of. Keep Michael’s spirit alive and always “Do what you do.” We would give anything to have Michael back but we know that is not possible. We would rather be at any other point in our lives than where we are right now. We are so very sad and our hearts are breaking. We have searched for answers, explored the “what ifs,” and asked “Why did this have to be? Every day is difficult for us as we want desperately to hug him or give him a kiss, but now can only turn to thoughts of doing so. In closing, we choose the refrain from a hymn that is known to many: “All I ask of you is forever to remember me, as loving you.” And so we do….. Vince and Bernadette, Stephen and Regina Ciavardini As sad as we are, the goodness and love of Michael’s life and personality is a common thread for us all. Over the past year, we have heard so many “Michael” stories that have brought joy to our hearts and a smile to our -SMM0035 JOIN US FOR MASS THIS MONDAY AT 8:30 AM 2 family and home to be blessed, please call the parish office, contact Deacon James or Msgr. CATHOLIC CHARITIES DONATIONS AT WORK: CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES OUR PARISH HAS DONATED $38, 639.00 SO FAR The goal for the 2012 Catholic Charities Appeal this year is $10 Million dollars. I have some good news. This year the appeal has raised nearly $6 million from over 40,000 gifts. Of these gifts over 2,500 are first time donors to the Appeal and over 16,000 have returned to support the Appeal after having been away for a year or more. It is remarkable and a bright spot for our Church even in difficult times. But as Jesus Christ instructs usour work is never done. We have $4 million left to raise to hit our $10 million goal and help thousands of our brothers and sisters in need. They need us; they need you – maybe now more than ever.
