University Campus Suffolk Head of Department, Nursing Studies Job Description Location: Salary: Contract Status: Hours of work: Pension: Holiday: Reporting to: Ipswich Grade 11, scp 51 to 56 (£57,784 to £67,516 per annum) Permanent Full-time; as are necessary to carry out the duties of the post Contributory USS pension scheme 30 days plus Bank Holidays Executive Dean of Faculty Purpose of the Job: The Head of Department is responsible for the leadership and management of the Department, including the development of curriculum, enterprise and research, the delivery of recruitment and retention targets and quality standards, the management of staff, budgets and other resources and the development of relevant networks within and beyond UCS. The post holder is line managed by and fully accountable to the Executive Dean of Faculty. The Head of Department is responsible for the financial management of their Department, and they line manage the staff within their Department. They are directly supported in this by relevant colleagues in professional support services. Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post 1. To provide academic leadership to the Department, including the positive promotion of academic innovation, research, enterprise and the student experience. 2. To develop and implement the five year Departmental Strategic Plan, in collaboration with the Executive Dean, in a manner resonant with the overarching UCS Strategic Plan. 3. To lead the development and delivery of the Department’s Annual Plan, setting relevant targets, adjusting curriculum delivery through performance analysis, identifying new opportunities, and setting realistic resource plans. 4. To be responsible for leading student recruitment within the Department, and for liaison with the appropriate professional services in relation to recruitment and admissions. 5. To ensure and enhance the quality of provision made available through, and supported by, the Department including chairing assessment boards and establishing practice which is compliant with UCS service standards and other quality audit, assessment and enhancement requirements, including those specified in relevant external contracts. April 2015 6. To have subject authority across the UCS Learning Network and engage collaboratively with leaders within the Network in academic planning. 7. To lead the development, planning and implementation of initiatives, systems and structures designed to enhance and expand service delivery, promoting student recruitment and retention and undertaking sustainable research, enterprise and scholarly activity. 8. To contribute to the learning, teaching and assessment of courses and programmes of study, through engagement in teaching. It is not expected that a Head of Department would carry more than 25% of the normal teaching load. 9. To lead and facilitate staff professional development and other activities designed to promote service enhancement and the dissemination of best practice. 10. To provide leadership and management to the staff in the Department and to ensure that effective recruitment, induction, support, appraisal and development are place to enable staff to fulfil their potential and deliver best practice in their relevant areas. 11. To be responsible for the planning, management and allocation of delegated budgets and to be accountable for expenditure. 12. To lead and facilitate the promotion of external income through collaborative activity, competitive bidding, sponsorship arrangements and similar activities. 13. To network effectively so as to build and maintain productive links and collaborative working arrangements with relevant professional and other external agencies, and to ensure that the work of the Department is informed by best practice. 14. To network effectively across UCS so as to build and maintain productive links and collaborative working arrangements with relevant sectors based on purposeful channels of communication appropriate to an open and consultative institution. 15. To maintain and further develop your own academic profile through teaching, research and/or enterprise. 16. To ensure the Department adopts a safety conscious culture and be responsible for the implementation of relevant health and safety policies across the Department 17. To fully embrace and implement the UCS equal opportunities policy and practices, ensuring there is a culture of inclusion for students and staff. 18. To contribute to the development of UCS as a member of the UCS Management Group. 19. To undertake any other responsibilities as determined from time to time by your line manager.
