HOMEWORK
I should receive homework before I start the class on the day the homework is due. NO LATE
HOMEWORK will be accepted. The lowest 2 Text Assignment grades will be dropped at the end of
the semester.
SECTIONS COVERED
Unit I Problem Solving and Sets
Unit II Numeration Systems, Operations and Algorithms
Unit III Number Theory
Unit IV Extending Numbers (Fractions, Decimals, Percents)
PROBLEM WRITE-UPS
Throughout the course, you will be assigned problems to work on in class. For many of these problems,
you will be asked to write up a solution or solve a related problem. Each assignment will be explained
when given and the due dates will be announced in class.
TEXT WORK
Occasionally work will be assigned out of the text that will relate to the in-class problems that we are
working on. These will typically require you to read the section of material in the book relating to the
topic. I don‘t intend to lecture or discuss much about these problems in class, but I am more than willing
to discuss them in my office hours or before and after class. These assignments will be due at the
beginning of the class period for which they are due. I reserve the right to accept NO LATE WORK.
A grade of zero will be assigned to any homework assignments not received before I start class on the
day that it is due. 2 text assignments will have their scores dropped. In class quizzes may be given and
these will count toward the textwork grade.
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS
Throughout the semester you may be asked to complete several writing assignments based on journal
readings, other outside readings, or reflections on topics that have been covered in class. These will
consist of completing questions related to the reading in the book or outside articles. I expect
college-level writing to be used in these assignments. You will be expected to answer the questions
asked using complete sentences. More details about the writing assignments will be given with the
assignments.
MAKE-UP EXAM POLICY
Each test must be taken at the designated time to receive full credit. No make up exam is given unless it
is a valid excuse. Test times are not negotiable. If a test is missed because of a valid excuse please
contact me within 24 hours of the scheduled test time.
DROP POLICY
If the student is unable to complete this course, it is the students responsibility to formally withdraw
from this course. The student may do so through the Registrar’s office after obtaining the necessary
signatures. Consent for withdrawal may be obtained in the Math Department office, GAB 435. The last
day to drop a class with an automatic “W” is Friday February 23rd. The last day to drop a class with a
“W” or “WF” is Tuesday, March 27th. “WF” is averaged into your GPA as an “F”. If the student does
not properly withdraw from the course but stops attending, the student will receive a performance grade,
usually “F”.
STUDENT EVALUATION OF TEACHING
The site https://evaluate.unt.edu/ will open up for student input from April 16th to May 4th at 5:00 pm.
Please make sure that you do the evaluations as it is MANDATORY, and final grade would be released
only after the student completes the evaluation.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
It is the responsibility of the student with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate
documentation from the office of the Dean of Students.
Please Note that the Syllabus is subject to change if the Instructor thinks that it is necessary to do so. Any such
changes would be announced in class.
