BAINTON PLAYGROUND
The Parish Council are having a
community day to clean up the
playground and re paint the fence with
preservative. The members of the
Parish Council have done this in the past
and a clean-up has been done recently
by one of our members. Please can
those
whose
children
use
the
playground come and help or anyone who
wishes to help our lovely village. The
playground is an asset to us all for
children and grandchildren and we must
care for it and maintain the required
health and safety standards. We are
still hoping to secure a grant to replace
all facilities but in the meantime have to
be seen to value what we have. So come
along SUNDAY 2ND AUGUST 10am. And
bring a paint brush.

I soon realised that all scenic routes are
hilly. something which doesn't bother
you in a car, but on a bike, anything that
is not absolutely flat constitutes a hill. I
was doing more walking than cycling,
much to the amusement of the locals.
There is something about cycling that
you miss when travelling by car.
Everything before you unfolds at a
leisurely pace. You have time to talk to
the people and study the buildings.
They will give guidance and support to
anyone wanting to:-
It is a self referral service, or GP led
activity.

tentative route I had chosen zigzagged all
over the place. It basically followed the
roads edged in green on the Michelin
maps. That is, the scenic routes.
…………..and now for the
continuation of a “Breton
Journey” by Chip…………
It did stop raining – eventually!
And the barman turned out not to be the
surly faced so-and-so I first thought he
was. The locals plied me with drinks
amid much laughter and impressions of
fish and breast-stroke swimming.
Apparently, due to my earlier arrival in
the pouring rain and my shiny so-called
waterproofs, I was now nicknamed the
Poisson d’Or (goldfish).
The second morning broke sunny and
clear. Thank God!
The soggy sponge padding of my
cyclist’s shorts was beginning to give me
nappy rash. I never learnt French at
school but even if I had I doubt whether
nappy rash would have been part of the
curriculum and there was NO way I was
going to explain my needs to a chemist
using sign language. (It shows you how
your attitudes change; a few months later
found me in a French chemists before a
group of very amused female assistants
and customers using sign language to
explain my nephew’s needs.
Pile
Ointment! – but I digress.
After ten hours of non-stop rain the day
before, it was soon like riding through a
tropical jungle with steam rising from the
trees and undergrowth which lined the
road. I had read that Brittany had been
stripped of its forests in the Napoleonic
era. But, if it had no forests, it certainly
did not lack trees. They hemmed in the
road on both sides, arching over to form,
in parts, a dark, steamy tunnel. It was
very much a case of not being able to see
the woods for the trees!
Now, although I was cycling down to
Spain, I was in no hurry. In fact, the
The Bretons are as much French as the
Welsh are English and at first sight
appear a surly lot.
However, a
“Bonjour” and a wave will solicit a
broad smile and such a profusion of
welcomes from even the most sour faced.
If you are not careful, it will lead to you
being invited into their homes and being
presented to the family like some long
lost brother - something which happened
to me on more than one occasion!
If you are REALLY lucky, you may find
yourself well blotto on home-made cider
and apple brandy before you can tear
yourself away from their hospitality.
The countryside is littered with derelict
or near derelict farmhouses and cottages.
Many, with their rustic charm and lack of
modern amenities, are masterpieces of
the vernacular. Built of granite, one of
the hardest stones to work with, I could
only marvel at the skill of the masons of
years gone by.
The sights, smells and sounds of the
Breton countryside were just the tonic I
needed. After years as a workaholic with
yesterdays,, todays, tomorrows and even
next week’s problems all on my mind at
once, I now found myself at peace with
the world.
Instead of heading south down to Spain, I
turned west into the heart of Brittanv.
Brittany, in whose charms I would find
so much mental solace and in whose soft
green bosom I would, at times, almost
suffocate. Little did I know how hard it
would be to escape.
