Villaboard® lining – Internal Walls
Introduction
The following information outlines the specifications for the James Hardie Villaboard® lining that can be included into a
project specification. Depending on the project, certain options can be deleted.
Note:
James Hardie Villaboard® lining must be installed and maintained in accordance to the current James Hardie
Villaboard® lining installation manual.
1.1
GENERAL CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT
Comply with statutory requirements/materials, labour and construction plant/materials and work, together with
additional conditions including: attending pre-construction meeting: Quality Assurance Inspection & Test Plan:
Warranties; and other.
1.2
VILLABOARD® LINING
Smooth recessed edge fibre cement internal lining sheet for tiled and untilled applications. Manufactured from
treated cellulose fibre, Portland cement, sand and water, cured by high pressure autoclaving manufactured to
AS/NZS 2908.2 ‘Cellulose – Cement products Part 2: Flat sheets’

NO SUBSTITUTIONS
Substitutions are not permitted to any specified system, or associated components and products.

TIMBER
use 30mm x 2.8mm galvanised fibre cement nails with a minimum head diameter of 6mm.
STEEL
 For fixing 6mm Villaboard lining to 0.55 – 0.75mm BMT steel framing, use 20mm Buildex
FibreZIP screws (use 30mm screws for 9 and 12mm sheets).
For fixing 6mm Villaboard lining to 0.80 – 1.6mm BMT steel framing, use 22mm HardiDrive®
screws (use 32mm screws for 9mm and 12mm sheets). Or 32mm Quickdrive® Screw Code:
CBSDG114SA.

FRAMING
1.8.1
WIND CLASSIFICATIONS
Framing must be in accordance with AS 1684 - ‘Residential timber-framed construction’ and the framing
manufacturer’s specifications.
1.8.2
FRAMING
STEEL
Use of steel framing must be in accordance with AS 3623 - ‘Domestic metal framing’ and the framing
manufacturers specifications. Use of steel framing must be in accordance with NASH Standard
Residential and Low-rise Steel Framing Part 1 Design Criteria and the framing manufacturer’s
specification.Framing members must have a base metal thickness (BMT) between 0.55 to 1.6mm. The
steel framing must have the appropriate level of durability required to prevent corrosion.

Use of timber framing must be in accordance with AS 1684 - ‘Residential timber-framed construction’ and
the framing manufacturer’s specifications. Use only seasoned timber.

ARRANGEMENT
Villaboard® lining can be fixed either horizontally or vertically,

JOINTING
Villaboard lining joints are set with jointing compounds reinforced with perforated paper tape. Both
recessed edge and butt joints are set with the use of James Hardie Basecoat and James Hardie Top Coat.
2.0.3
TILED FINISH
The thicknesses of tiles used over Villaboard lining are restricted based on stud centres and the thickness
of the sheet, (see Table 9, in the James Hardie Villaboard® lining Installation Manual, see below).
Use flexible tile adhesive for tile application. Refer to adhesive manufacturer for suitability and application
information.

PAINT FINISHES
Prior to application of paint finishes, remove any residual sanding dust and ensure the surface is suitable
for paint application.
Always follow the paint manufacturer’s recommendations for paint suitability, mixing and application.
NOTE
Use of a ‘sealer coat’ or ‘preparation undercoat’ is recommended.

CONTROL JOINTS
Control joints are required in long runs of Villaboard lining walls or ceilings in either direction. Control joints
should also be provided at frame junctions/joints such as wall intersections.
Horizontal control joints in walls are required at 3.6 maximum centres.
For vertical control joints, refer to the following table 7 from the Villaboard® lining installation manual.

MAINTENANCE
James Hardie recommends that the cleaning and maintenance of all finishes be undertaken regularly as
per the recommendations of the manufacturer. Joints must also be maintained and be free of dirt and
grime.
