SPAN 1501– Intermediate Spanish I Tuesdays and Fridays Spring, 2011 Fordham University Modern Languages & Literatures Dr. Lehman Telephone: x2656 Email: slehman@fordham.edu Office: Faber Hall, Room 561 Office Hours: W 10:00-11:15 I. Course Description This course will review all basic linguistic functions (describing, discussing likes and dislikes, narrating in the past and present, reacting and recommending, comparing, etc.) encountered in SPAN 1001 and SPAN 1002 via intensive practice in the four basic skills of communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will hone their skills in employing the present indicative, the present progressive, reflexive and object pronouns, the preterite and imperfect, and the subjunctive mood. All functions, vocabulary, and grammar will be practiced in relevant, familiar contexts, which will be further supplemented by cultural readings, visuals, and presentations. Particular emphasis will be placed on active participation by all students with the aim of consistently practicing vocabulary and functions studied. II. Course Components Participation and Preparedness: In order to best learn a language, it is necessary for the student to practice and review the language on a daily basis and to make his or her best effort to learn all vocabulary and understand all grammatical concepts before each and every class. Class sessions will provide a forum for students to apply the knowledge gained from studying the text and completing its corresponding activities. Students must participate actively in class at all times, even when others are speaking. That is, they must remain attentive to what is being discussed and participate actively as both listener and speaker. Given the necessity of daily preparation, attendance is mandatory in this course. A maximum of two unexcused absences is permitted before a penalty is issued. Each absence after the second unexcused absence will lower the final grade by one third of a letter grade (e.g. B+ > B). Lateness to class also falls under this policy. Excessive absences may result in failure. In the event of a family emergency, death, or severe illness, please submit appropriate documentation (note from a doctor or the Dean, or a Certificate of Attendance from the Funeral Director) to the teacher upon your return to class. Students participating in scheduled University-sanctioned events must notify the instructor in advance. No makeup quizzes or exams will be given except under these special circumstances. Cellular telephones and other electronic devices must be turned off during class time. Texting, speaking in English, and any other distracting activities will detract from your participation grade. Student Activities Manual: Students are to complete all exercises (“Workbook”) and listening activities (“Lab Manual”) in the Student Activities Manual in order to constantly reinforce the acquisition of each lesson's grammar and vocabulary topics. Students will dedicate two hours per week at the Language Lab (Keating Hall B25 at Rose Hill; Lowenstein Room 412 at Lincoln Center) to complete the listening exercises for each chapter. It is important to distribute the two lab hours over two separate days, given the fact that one key to successful language acquisition is daily exposure. All exercises in both the “Workbook” section and the “Lab Manual” section are due on the day in which the corresponding chapter is finished, indicated on the syllabus. These exercises must be self-corrected in contrasting color ink against the Answer Key to Accompany Student Activities Manual. Students must pace themselves by working every day on these activities, since late work will not be collected. Page 1 of 10 Culture: Integral to the study of language is developing cultural awareness, which is achieved in this course through the many cultural readings in the text, assigned at the discretion of instructors. Instructors may also choose to enhance the course with other cultural presentations and assignments. Compositions: A minimum of three compositions will be assigned throughout the semester. The first composition is to be 1 page in length, double-spaced; the second and third will be 2 pages in length, double-spaced. The due dates are listed on the syllabus. Individual instructors may opt to assign others. Rewrites will be factored into the composition grade. Note: When writing compositions, use of the textbook and/or a Spanish-English dictionary is acceptable. Any other help—from Spanish speaking friends, online translators, tutors, etc.—is not allowed and is a violation of the Policy on Academic Integrity. Other Written Work: In addition to the Student Activities Manual, homework assignments from the text or from other sources will be distributed throughout the semester. In-class written assignments may also be completed at the discretion of the instructor. Assessment (Quizzes and Exams): There will be three chapter quizzes, a cumulative midterm exam, and a comprehensive final examination in this course. Additionally, several short listening or vocabulary quizzes will also be given at the instructor’s discretion in order to assess each student's progress throughout the semester. Tests and quizzes will generally assess oral skills, listening comprehension, writing skills, and reading comprehension. Each will cover pertinent linguistic functions, as well as vocabulary. III. Final Grade Oral Communication Skills / Active Participation determined by preparedness, accuracy of speech, daily in-class participation, interaction during group work, attentiveness, and Student Activities Manual (Workbook AND Lab pages). Compositions 3 Quizzes (Chapters 1/2, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5) (each quiz = 10%) Midterm (Chapters 1-3) Oral Presentation Final Examination (Chapters 1-6) Reminder: Absences negatively affect the final grade.
