(N) Ecology-related topics for PREDICTIVE THINKING / CAUSE & EFFECT
Loss of diversity:
Habitat loss
Exploitation ( ex. overfishing)
Pollution
Invasive species
Change within a food web (see sample question in Specs):
Accumulation of a toxin or heavy metal (within 1 individual)
Magnification of a toxin in a food chain
Removal of an organism within a web
Loss of decomposers
Sustainability: How do human lifestyles affect sustainability?
Renewable/nonrenewable resources
Water (Biscayne aquifer)
Atmospheric pollution
Alternative energy
Ecosystem diversity
Human activity
Environmental monitoring
Consider these topics: Many people believe that…
Many resources are infinite in supply
Humans are separate from nature
Nature is something for humans to overcome
There is always ‘more’
Use the Predictive thinking concept outline but speculate about:
L.17.11- CONCEPT-costs and benefits of, (depletion of Biscayne aquifer), or
(invasion of the lion fish in our reefs)
SCIENTIFIC METHOD- show diagram, explain an example scenario of adding
fertilizer to plants in soil; tell students that water below contains algae; ask for pairs
of variables…independent/ dependent, then write a sample hypothesis.
Other ‘prompts’ can be data tables, graphs, or diagrams ( I’ve included one for
salinity and seed generation and another for dissolved oxygen levels and time of
day)
Each text chapter has graphs which can be used to stimulated practice and
Classzone.com has graph analysis exercises for practice. Code is

Your World Biotechnology(DNA, genetics, GMO’s, clones, vaccines, and other
biotechnology applications, plants, disease, immunity)
Entire issue is a collection of articles with a single emphasis…good for ‘after
the EOC’, misc. assignments. Specific articles are specific to benchmark
components and useful for Core Literacy reading.
