It is flanked by three terraced residential roads and one main road (Upton Lane). Immediately opposite the school site is the Corporation of London open space West Ham Park. Upton Lane is the only busy road in the direct vicinity of the school grounds but is used primarily by local traffic only (school or private trips). Portway and Plashet Road are within two minutes of the site and they provide a link between Stratford, Upton Park and East Ham. Pedestrian & School entrances: There are four access points to the school. The main entrance and main staff car park are located on Boleyn Road. The staff car park entrance also serves as a pedestrian/ Student access as well as being a services entrance to the kitchens. There is a pedestrian gate entrance on St Anthony’s Road which is used by students in the morning and end of day only. Lancaster Road provides a small gate entrance which is used primarily by VI Form pedestrians but also some students from the lower school. A small car park for staff is located and accessed from Upton Lane. A very small number of students use this access also. St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 2 Following various informal conversations and discussions with students regarding how they travel to school there were some interesting points that arose. Regarding the entrances to the school, we found that the majority of students spoken to know where all four entrances to the school are and can identify them with ease. When asked if they would walk a student replied “I would like too dangerous.” Taurean, Year to school to but it is 7 When asked if they would take up the option to cycle, it was a mixed bag of responses. Those who said yes agreed that cycling is a great idea both for individual health and the environment. However, those who were anti-cycling to school had issues with security and road safety. The main problems that students found when going home from school were traffic and congestion of buses. Other students had ideas regarding safety and wellbeing, one student said “It would be good to have more teachers around bus stops” Freddie, Year 8 A positive outcome from talking to the students was that they all felt safe once inside the school premises. Here is a photo of the main entrance on Boleyn Road it is residential housing and it is the entrance that the majority of Year 7 and 8 use to enter and exit the school. It is protected by a barrier however the road markings in front of the school are becoming faint. This is the second entrance on Boleyn Road, this entrance is the largest of all four and would be ideal if students wanted to bring their bikes into school. St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 3 This is the rear entrance to the school on Lancaster Road, it isn’t a popular entrance for the boys and is mainly used by 6th formers, while commuting to St. Angela’s. This is the entrance on St. Antony’s Road it is rather small and is mainly used by senior students, Year 9, 10 and 11 as it close to their playground. Also along the road of this entrance there seems to be a lot of rubbish on the streets which isn’t very appealing. Students feel that mornings work adequately in terms of timetabling but that after school buses are infrequent and therefore overcrowded. This causes both boarding and sometimes behavioural problems. St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 6 Trains/Tube: Upton Park (District/ Metropolitan Lines) is within 15 minutes walk. Stratford (Central, Jubilee, DLR, Silverlink Metro, Brentwood to Liverpool Street Overhead) is within 20 minutes. Plaistow (District/ Metropolitan Lines) is approximately 25 minutes walk. Forest Gate BR Station (Brentwood to Liverpool Street Overhead) is within 10 minutes walk. Roads: Upton Lane is a through route from Romford Road (Stratford to Ilford) and Plaistow Broadway (Stratford to Plaistow to Green Gate/ Beckton). Upton Lane is adjacent to the school. Romford Road is 10 minutes walk from the school. Green Street in Upton Park is around 12 minutes walk from the school. St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 7 St Bonaventure’s School is well served by all transport links. These links either move through or terminate in key population areas which are part of the school catchment. It may be the case that 10 to 15 minutes walking is combined with a bus trip (one way) in some instances but this is well within normal parameters. School Opening & Closing Times: School site Breakfast club (if applicable) Pupils official school time Nursery (if applicable) Lower School Upper School After school clubs (if applicable) Open/start 0700 hours NA Close/finish 1800 hours approx NA 0800 0845 0845 1525 1700 1525 1525 1625 Revision classes may run during half terms and holidays. This is an ad hoc provision dependant on the current years circumstances. Pupil & Staff number: Numbers of pupils on role Number of staff 1276 (inc VI Form) 162 Use of school outside of school hours including extended schools activities: Adult Education is provided in the evenings at the school. Local parking is often sufficient but local resident parking may be impacted upon by incoming adult students. Introducing our pupils and staff After school events such as parent and information evenings have a big impact on neighbourhood parking and use of local roads. St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 8 Number of pupils who attend the school: 1276 Age range of Pupils: 11 to 18 years Other information about the pupils who attend our school: Students are of a multicultural cross section and are all male excepting the female VI form contingent which numbers approximately 350. However not all of these students will use the St Bons campus and will be solely located at St Angela’s School. Pupils travel on average longer distances to school because being a Catholic School our admission criteria is such that we take pupils from a range of Parishes within Newham. I have to get at 6.00 am to go there but I am always late but if there was a school bus that could go through East Ham then I would be able to get there on time. More number of buses. The buses are not frequent enough meaning I get home very late. I think travelling to school is fine but in our school to many gates are open that is why it is so easy for trespassers to get in. Every morning when I am waiting for the 104 bus when it arrives, it is so packed. Sometimes the buses are too crowded and the traffic lights when it’s on red are too slow. St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 29 The 325 from Forest Gate to school should be more frequent. The journey is all ways crowded or packed sometime the driver doesn't stop for people. I travel to school by train when I get a bus. Sometimes the trains are delayed or there are problems so I get late. The trains need to be improved. Enjoyable aspects of walking I have fun walking through the park with my friends and sometimes cousin and like to view wildlife. There is loads of traffic and we have to wait for a long time for the bus. Buses are too crowded like 147, 325, 25 and 86. Its very dangerous taking the 104 and 238 to school because pupils from others schools always try to attack the St. Bons pupils. The buses are too crowded and people get squashed. Some older year group’s yr 9-11 use offensive language and they don’t come from the front door; they come to the back of the buses. Citizens get frustrated by behaviour and think that the school isn't teaching them manners. The public transport gets me to and from school quickly though it takes long for the bus to get to the bus stop and I don’t feel safe in buses. Traffic Sometimes there is congestion on the road, so it’s slower to get to school. Many people also pay loud music on there phones in the bus, disturbing others. Very congested on Upton lane and Woodgrange Road/Avenue. Traffic and congestion. Noisy and too behaviour on buses. The buses are too crowded and even if it's full the bus driver will still (sometimes) let more passengers on and sometime if the bus is not full the bus driver does not let anymore on. The journey to school in the morning is brilliant because there is less congestion St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 30 but when im coming home from school, t takes a really long time for me to get home. Riding bicycles to school On the way to school to be able to ride bikes to school and less traffic. I feel that the school should encourage cycling to school. Can people who have bikes ride to school. I f they have a lock, they can lock their bike somewhere. If you have a bike could we ride it to school and store it somewhere. Enjoyed aspects of the journey The journey is very good fun and safe. You meet new people as well. It is okay because on the way to school I meet my friend then I feel safe and not lonely. Also it's nice to take in some fresh air on the way to school and home Graphs showing trends and key results St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan 31 Making Walking better 140 Frequency 120 100 80 60 40 20 0 e af e af r r ro es ut to to t el sh tr e th ol s os ho sc cr pa it w s th e th n at g si er os cr k al w pa ot fo to er g n re es ac ild an le in ht ol ho pl sc ch C lig s nt re e pa h ot S S A or M e r te et or M B et re st Agree Strongly Neither Agree or Disagree Disagree Strongly Agree Strongly Disagree Agree Disagree Don't Know Agree Disagree Strongly Neither Agree or Disagree Don't Know Bike ownership Yes No 43.6% Yes 8.0% No 43.6% Yes 8.0% No St. Bonaventures School Travel Plan Survey Results 32 Parents survey If you choose to drive why do you drive to school? As children do not take any notice of the bus driver. Weather permitting and the distance too far too walk. Is it safe to cycle to school? But how? Training is a must.
