Objectives
1) Students will be able to read and write Hiragana, Katakana and the Kanji in
Genki I.
2) Students will command basic communication tools and ability to deconstruct Japanese
Course Requirements
Class Website: Please use this as a resource. You can download the powerpoints from class, and have access to other helpful study materials such as Quizlet, music, and kanji practice. Don’t use the powerpoints for purposes other than self-study.
Attendance
- If you have a legitimate reason you cannot attend class, please contact BEFORE class. I will not accept explanations after the absence unless there is a note from a professional.
- After 3 absences, 2% will be deducted from your final grade for each absence.
Homework : See page 2 for a detailed outline of the HW for the semester.
- Homework handed in after the due date on the syllabus can be handed in until the first class of the subsequent chapter (HW from Ch. 2 can be handed in until the first day of Ch. 3) for a 10% penalty.
- You may study with friends, but do your HW alone . Plagiarism will result in 0 points.
Chapter Quizzes : Given at the end of each chapter; taken from the grammar points in the book and covered in class.
Kanji & Listening Quizzes : Kanji, dictation and translation (these accompany Chapter Quizzes).
Vocab Quizzes (2 per chapter)
- Given during the first 5 minutes of class. No make-up if you are late or absent.
- 0 points if you are not present at the time the quiz is given.
Midterm Presentation : 2-3 person group skit. Perfect memorization is required.
Final Exam : Thursday, May 26th 1:45-3:45pm

Leaving the classroom for more than 10 minutes.
Dropping off homework in the instructor’s mailbox. Late homework will only be collected during the immediately following class.

Before coming to class
Read the chapter thoroughly in advance and come with questions. Also, review the powerpoints.
Listen to the audio CDs to train your ears. Copy them to your iPod, iPhone, Android, etc. so that you can listen to them during your commute, break, or for studying. (Anime/Japanese music work too!)
During quizzes and exams
Do not look at answers from the people around you. If you are caught doing this it will be an automatic 0 and is a violation of academic integrity.
