Meeting Minutes SINO-Micro 2010 ASM San Diego Meeting, May 26, 2010, 6:30 PM, Panda Inn Restaurant, San Diego, CA Prepared by Zhao-Qing Luo With the generous sponsorship from Wenyuan Shi and the coordination work of Frank Yang, the Sino-Micro group has its first gathering at San Diego on May 26, 2010. A total of 19 members (list below) attended the meeting. The attendees first recognized the great effort by Frank Yang in bringing the group together. The meeting also acknowledged the initiations from Hao Shen and Guangming Zhong in establishing this organization. The great work done by Oliver He for building the official website and Chuanwu Xi for drafting the bylaws was also appreciated. The meeting discussed several important issues about our association, including objectives, organization and administration. Objectives: 1. To provide opportunities for members to know the research programs of other members. 2. To establish a social network which can facilitate our career development. 3. To work as a group to create a platform for enhancing scientific interactions with our colleagues in China Organization and administration: 1. This will be a registered non-for-profit organization. 2. The members will elect a president and a president-elect who will serve for a two-year term. Other executive officers will be appointed by the president. 3. There will be a $10 membership fee each year. 4. In the initial phase, the membership is only open to principal investigators. 5. A newsletter will be published periodically on the website. Potential collaboration between Sino-Micro and Journal of Microbes and Infection (http://jmi.fudan.edu.cn/cn/dqml.asp) in aspects such as reviewing service, contributing articles to the journal and the use of the journal as a vehicle to recruit postdocs from China. 3. Help to host and screen graduate students supported by the Chinese government to work in US labs 4. Whether regular activities should be organized, the present consensus is to use events like the ASM annual meeting as vehicles for member gathering 5. Put the CV of our members on the website so that our colleagues in China can self-match with people with common research interests. A linkage to our website will be added to the website of the China Society of Microbiology (CSM) 6. The possibility of having a session available for members to present their research in the annual meeting of the CSM. 7. The possibility of seeking fund from the Chinese government to support scientific activities in China 8.
