Weight Loss Percentages 1. Indicators for nutrition intervention: a. It is involuntary and b. Exceeds 10% usual body weight in six months or c. Exceeds 7.5% usual body weight in three months or d. Exceeds 5% usual body weight in one month e. Moderate risk BMI 20-23 or greater f. High risk BMI 20 or less 2. To calculate % weight loss a. Substract the new weight from the baseline weight b. Divide the answer by the baseline weight c. Multiply the answer by 100 e.g. Take a person who was 48 kg and is now 41 kg 48 - 41 = 7 / 48 = 0.1458 x 100 = 14.58% 3. To work out BMI (Body Mass Index) a. Weight in kg divided by Height in metres, squared e.g. Take our person who is 41 kg and is 1.58 m 1.58 x 1.58 = Ht 2 – 2.496 41 / 2.496 = BMI = 16.42. 4. Malnutrition Risk (BAPEN) a. High Risk i. BMI < 18.5 ii. BMI 18.5-20 & weight loss of 3.2 kg or more in last 6 months iii. BMI > 20 & weight loss of 6.4 kg or more in last 6 months b. Medium Risk i.
