Organization Information Mission statement: The Peralta Parent Teacher Group (PPTG) is the supporting arm of Peralta Elementary School in Oakland, California. The PPTG is dedicated to supporting and enriching the education of our children through fundraising, community building, and recruiting and coordinating parent volunteers. The Peralta Community is committed to the development of the whole child. We value a safe, welcoming environment for students to develop high self-esteem, compassion and respect for others, and a love for learning. Our goal is for every child to reach his or her potential as a knowledgeable, caring, responsible citizen who makes contributions to our world and embraces options for his or her own growth. Organizational History: Peralta celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2005. We started as a one-room school house in 1880. The Peralta Mother’s Club was founded in 1908 and was the first of the parents’ groups organized to support the school. In the 1970s, the school was almost closed. At that time the Peralta Parent Teacher Group (PPTG) was created. The PPTG organizes a variety of events for the school which focus on community building, fundraising, and outreach. Community building events include the annual diversity dinner, garden work days, and the spring festival. Fundraising activities include the annual fund drive, walkathon, and grants applications. Outreach includes school tours and working with neighboring schools. The PPTG has no employees and approximately 40 active volunteers. 3-5 Year Plan The PPTG will continue to organize the events described in the “overview.” In addition to those events, there is an annual auction fundraiser, salad bar volunteers recruitment and coordination, Tuesday afternoon produce stand, testing days snack donation, stuffing of Friday folders (monthly communications to parents about school and district activities, curriculum updates), and a myriad of other activities to support the school. Other than the ongoing activities, the PPTG is overseeing and planning a process to maintain economic and ethnic diversity for the school community. Due to a combination of housing price increases, changes in the age composition of the school zone, and other economic changes affecting people’s options for private schools, the school economic and ethnic demographics have been changing gradually and steadily. Five years ago the free or reduced lunch program eligible students made up approximately 60% of the students. Currently approximately 35% of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The school community would like to see this percentage stabilize rather than continue to fall. Current plans for kindergarten outreach are taking this goal into consideration. Administrative costs: 2008-2009: $8997, which included $ 4,150 for CPA Annual amount spent on fundraising: 2008-2009: $20,619, which included $7,680 of Berkeley Scrip purchase. 5 highest grant or gift amounts and sources awarded last year - SEE BELOW $25,000 S. Newsletters? Any press? Program/Project Title: Peralta Environmental Stewardship Model Program Please provide a one sentence description of your program/project. We aim to create, implement, and share an environmental stewardship model in which students investigate their local community while contributing to the global dialogue around stewardship and sustainability. Is this a pilot program/project? (Yes/No) Yes. Year program/project was established. Fall 2007 If this is not a pilot program/project, what year was the program/project established? Program/Project End Date: On-going. Requested Cash Amount: The grant range is $20,000 to $60,000. The Requested Cash Amount should not exceed $60,000.00 (sixty thousand dollars). We are requesting the full $60,000. What is the total project/program budget? $135,025 Please describe how you plan to use the funds from American Honda Foundation, if awarded, for this project/program. Funds for this program would be used to help us realize our vision for an environmental stewardship model program, which is project-based and integrates science, health, art and technology. Another key element of this model is providing professional development opportunities for the classroom teachers. Workshops would model and provide tools to develop students’ meta-cognitive strategies and inquiry-driven collaboration. These funds would support this professional development, artists-in-residence, educational consultants, materials, technology, and other elements critical to our vision. Please upload the budget for this particular program/project. Be sure to include a line item breakdown w/narrative for the requested amount. Program/Project Narrative Please upload a file that describes the program/project in detail including the activities planned. Upload attachment to excel doc What are your plans to recruit or attract participants for this program/project? paragraph Peralta students and teachers are at the heart of this endeavor. Our ultimate goal to share this model program with a larger audience will be achieved by publishing our results, lessons, and insights with others in the online community. Through our recipe card project we will create a presence in the local farmer’s market community, as well, which will expand our reach to the vendors and shoppers at the farmer’s markets in Berkeley and Oakland. This exposure will attract potential guest speakers and others who could benefit from and contribute to this approach to environmental stewardship. Short-term Goals: Paragraph: Recognizing that long-term measures may not completed by the end of the grant period, what are your projected short-term, measurable benefits, outcomes, or impacts? We will assess changes in student knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding environmental stewardship, nutrition, and other topics applicable to Peralta’s science integration programs. We will stratify this element by grade level and age. We will also assess whether these elements affect student attitudes and behaviors outside of school. Additionally, we will conduct observations and interviews with teachers to assess changes in teachers’ content learning, pedagogical methods, attitudes and beliefs about environmental stewardship, nutrition, and other content areas applicable to this program. Long-term Goals: Paragraph: What are the general, long-term goals of your proposed program/project? Long-tem, our goal is to cultivate a learning community of critical-thinkers who think globally and act locally. It is our hope that this model will be replicated in part or whole at other sites. We seek to inspire our students, staff, families, and larger community to embrace their role as environmental stewards. . What data collection and evaluation procedures do you have in place: Paragraph: Researchers from Rockman Et Al (www.rockman.com) will conduct qualitative evaluation with Peralta teachers and students involved in projects supported by this grant. Evaluation data will be captured through a combination of surveys, observations, and interviews. Additionally, we will be adapting and implementing a “habits of mind” assessment tool to assess students’ meta-cognitive abilities. Lastly, our project includes results-based leadership training for teachers. In this model, teachers will work collaboratively on inquiry-driven investigations. For example, kindergarten teachers may investigate what happens when they introduce meta-cognitive strategies into their learning environment. The results of these collaborations are shared with others in the learning community and help shape instruction and assessment to improve student results. Top Three Pros to funding this program/project. 1. This funding would help us to build the capacity of our school to cultivate critical thinking scientists. 2. Our students would be able to experience an empowering approach to scientific knowledge where they would truly be challenged to think globally and act locally. 3. In addition to serving our students, this funding would enable us to create and share resources for a larger community which includes, but is not limited to, the 63 other elementary schools in the Oakland Unified School, the Rockridge and Temescal neighborhoods and shopping districts, local farmer’s market shoppers and vendors, and the online community. Top Three Cons to funding this program/project. 1. Our plan may be ambitious. We intend to accomplish each of the goals presented, but realistically may need more time to see them through to actuality. 2. While our plan is robust and inclusive of all grade levels, it may be unevenly applied between the grade levels. 3. With the opportunity to build a new, reflective assessment tool to capture students’ habits of mind in relation to science and the arts, comes the challenge of adapting an already existing high school model. We may need more time for successful school-wide implementation. What are your plans for expanding this program/project?: Paragraph This is intended to be an ongoing program. Our vision for a school-wide environmental stewardship program will continue to be guided by academic standards, 21st Century Skills (www.21stcenturyskills.org), and local and global environmental issues. As the issues change, so will our lessons and activities. This program has the potential to evolve for years to come. Please list past results of the program/project (if applicable)Paragraph Are there documents that capture qualitative and/or quantitative results from this specific program since 2007? Already there has been a shift in student attitudes about environmental issues close to home and around the globe as evidenced by… Interest in the salad bar and produce stand… Our school has become a magnet for families looking to be a part of a …
