join a team of 4 other consultants in providing a proactive clinical microbiology and infection control
service for the North Glasgow sector.
The microbiology departments in NHSGGCare based on three sites and provide an integrated
diagnostic microbiology & virology service to the population of Glasgow and Clyde, including the
Primary Care Division. This service includes a full range of diagnostic bacteriology, serology, molecular
diagnostics, antibiotic assays and mycology culture. In addition, the North Glasgow Laboratory hosts a
range of National Microbiology Reference Services. Several of the Scottish Microbiology Reference
Laboratories are based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A comprehensive range of molecular diagnostic
assays are performed in virology and the reference laboratories

Glasgow – A Fantastic Place to Live and Work
Glasgow has a wealth of attractions including some of the UK's finest Victorian architecture,
internationally acclaimed museums, galleries and cultural venues all thriving in a unique cosmopolitan
atmosphere. The renaissance of Glasgow over the last decade is an urban success story to which
many major UK and European cities aspire.
Glasgow is now one of Europe's top cultural capitals with a complete all year calendar of festivals and
events. Native Glaswegians and visitors enjoy widely acclaimed bars and first class restaurants nestling
within the best commercial shopping district outside London. All of this is located within a stone's throw
of some of the country's finest parks and gardens.
Glasgow is the gateway to Scotland's most spectacular scenery, with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
only 40 minutes away. Glasgow is at the core of national rail and road networks and is served by two
airports, Glasgow International and Glasgow Prestwick International
(on the Ayrshire coast, southwest of the city).
2.
The Hospital Modernisation Programme - The Services of Tomorrow
A massive re-organisation of NHSGGC has just been completed and the Diagnostics Directorate took
over responsibility for all Diagnostic services in February 2006. The re-organisation was essential to
align the organisational structure to the Acute Services Review (ASR) recommendations and support
the Hospital Modernisation Programme which is transforming healthcare provision locally, regionally
and nationally. Seven hundred million pounds of investment underpins an ambitious building
programme that will deliver truly world class and integrated care from the following major acute sector
units;





New Cancer Centre, PET CT Imaging Centre and Acute Receiving/OP Unit at Gartnavel
General.
New Acute South Glasgow Hospital with “gold standard” triple co-location of
Maternity/Children’s/Adult Hospital services. Neurosciences Centre also on site.
Re-development of Glasgow Royal Infirmary into the second major acute hospital.
Ambulatory Care/Diagnostic and Treatment Centres at the Stobhill and Victoria sites.
Development of a single dedicated Regional Cardiothoracic Centre at the Golden Jubilee
National Hospital.
The Hospital Modernisation Programme will ensure that walk-in/walk-out hospital services are provided
for the majority of patients. The pattern of service provision will shift to reflect moves towards
ambulatory care. Currently 85% to 90% of patient encounters with acute hospital services are on a
walk-in/walk-out same day basis. These include out-patient attendances, diagnostic tests, imaging
procedures, and a range of day surgery procedures. In future, these services will be provided from
ambulatory care centres designed to deliver the streamlined process of care which patients want - to be
seen quickly by the appropriate specialist, to undergo clinical investigation and to receive treatment
without delay.
The redesign and redevelopment of Glasgow's acute services will address many of the pressures
currently facing the hospital service. The new services will be provided in modern facilities rather than in
19th century buildings not designed for modern health care. The purpose- designed facilities will enable
the one-stop/rapid diagnosis and treatment models required for the future. Continuity of service will
improve with the elimination of the need for patients' notes and results to be moved from building to
building. Concentration of services will allow the requirements of junior doctors’ doctor’s hours and
issues arising from increasing sub-specialisation of medicine to be addressed through the creation of
larger staff teams and sustainable rotas for both junior and senior staff.
The formation of larger clinical teams will make sure that programmes of work, including the need to
cover emergencies without interfering with waiting list and ambulatory care sessions, can be planned
effectively. The concentration of in-patient services on fewer sites will help strengthen specialist
services and maximise the capacity of the service.

General Information
The Glasgow Microbiology Service forms part of the Acute Division, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
Directorate of Diagnostics. There is ongoing rationalisation of NHS Greater Glasgow Microbiology
services.
Currently Microbiology Services are configured as two sectors within Glasgow and Clyde. These are the
South & Clyde sector and the North sector. The South & Clyde Sector provides services to the Royal
Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Vale of Leven Hospital, Victoria Infirmary, the New Victoria
Hospital ACAD, the Southern General Hospital and Royal Hospital for Sick Children. There are two main
Microbiology laboratories, one at the Southern General in the new laboratories building and one at the
Royal Alexandra Hospital. The North sector comprises a single laboratory housed within the New Lister
Building (NLB) on the Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) site. The North Sector provides services to the
Glasgow Royal Infirmary, New Stobhill Hospital, Western Infirmary, Gartnavel Hospitals (including West of
Scotland Cancer Centre & Brownlee Infectious Diseases Unit), Lightburn Hospital, Drumchapel Hospital.
Clinical microbiology cover is also provided for the Golden Jubilee Hospital (National Waiting Times
Centre).
All departments provide an integrated diagnostic microbiology & virology service to the population of
Glasgow, including the Primary Care Division. This service includes a full range of diagnostic
bacteriology, serology, Chlamydia detection, antibiotic assays and mycology culture alongside
molecular diagnostics.
Specialist Virology services for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde are provided by the West of Scotland
Specialist Virology Centre (WOSSVC), which is co-located with the North Sector laboratory within the
NLB. The NLB also hosts a range of National Microbiology Reference services and share a dedicated
state-of-the-art molecular suite with the WOSSVC and the North Sector diagnostic microbiology
laboratory.
There are close links with the Departments of Public Health and Health Protection Scotland (HPS).
Full accreditation with Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd, is currently held by all laboratories.
The departments participate in all relevant National External Quality Assessment Schemes.
10.
Services within Sectors
Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Glasgow Royal Infirmary, in the east of the city, provides a wide range of district general hospital,
regional, supra-regional and national acute clinical services.
Since 2001 the Princess Royal Maternity and the Jubilee Building have been opened, providing
accommodation for a new A & E department, a coronary care unit, an acute medical receiving unit and
an orthopaedic surgery inpatient unit. The Canniesburn Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit has been located
in the new building. It has six dedicated operating theatres and specialist inpatient and outpatient
services.
Between 2010 and 2015, further work will ensure the Royal Infirmary will be fully equipped to serve as
the main inpatient hospital for the north and east of the NHSGGC area.
Western Infirmary
The Western Infirmary on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow's West End houses most of the acute
emergency and receiving functions serving the west of the city - accident and emergency, intensive
care, orthopaedic trauma, emergency surgery, acute medicine and acute stroke. In addition, the
hospital provides elective gastrointestinal, breast and cardiothoracic surgery. Medical specialties
include cardiology (coronary care, invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigation, and angioplasty),
general medicine, and renal medicine (including renal transplantation).
Gartnavel Hospitals
Situated in the west of the city, Gartnavel General Hospital operates in close partnership with the
Western Infirmary. A broad range of medical and surgical sub-specialties are provided, supported by an
eight-theatre inpatient operating department.
The breadth and complexity of services at Gartnavel has expanded considerably over the years, with
the development of the Brownlee Centre for communicable diseases, the Glasgow Homoeopathic
Hospital, the Ophthalmology department, West of Scotland Cancer Centre (the Tom Wheldon Building)
and of course the Beatson.
The Southern General Hospital
The Southern General Hospital is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of
approximately 900 beds. The hospital site is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment, which is
due for completion in 2015. This will provide an outstanding facility that will feature 100% single-room
patient accomodation.
Services include Accident and Emergency, Dermatology, ENT, General Medicine (including subspecialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including
Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), Gynaecology, Neonatal Paediatrics, Obstetrics,
Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Physically Disabled Rehabilitation and Continuing Care.
The Obstetrics, Urology, Ophthalmology and Dermatology Departments provide the single in-patient
location for the whole population of South Glasgow.
Maxillofacial and ENT Departments for the whole city were centralised at the hospital in the autumn of
2002 providing trauma and elective surgery and specialist provision for head and neck cancer. South
and West Glasgow’s in-patient Gynaecology service was centralised at the Southern General Hospital
in late 2003 / early 2004, bringing together on one site a range of services from across the city. The
Assessment and Rehabilitation service for the Physically Disabled is also provided for the whole city
from the Southern General Hospital.
There is also a wide range of therapeutic services including Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics,
Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, and Speech Therapy.
The Institute of Neurological Sciences is based on the Southern General campus and provides
Neurosurgical, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuroradiological and Neuropathology
facilities for the West of Scotland. The Institute is equipped with a Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Suite, SPECT Scanner, two Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners, and angiography facilities.
The Institute has recently undergone a major upgrade to incorporate ENT and Oral & Maxillofacial
Services and is now equipped with additional facilities including the development of a new ward,
four additional theatres, ICU, HDU and a new out-patient department.
The Westmarc Unit houses the clinical services for prosthetics and orthotics, including the Artificial
Limb and Appliance Centre, within a purpose-built facility. The centre is staffed jointly by hospital
and university personnel from the National Centre for Training in Prosthetics and Orthotics of
Strathclyde University.
The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Unit for Scotland provides a spinal injuries service to the
whole of Scotland. This is housed in a purpose-built facility attached to the Institute of Neurological
Sciences.
The Victoria Infirmary
The Victoria Infirmary is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately
370.
The range of services includes Cardiology, Rheumatology, Haematology, Respiratory Medicine,
Gastro-Enterology, Diabetes, and Endocrinology. The General Surgical Services include an eightbed High Dependency Unit and sub-specialties including Vascular, Breast Care, and Colorectal.
The Mansionhouse Unit is located close to the Victoria Infirmary and accommodates 262 elderly
patients for Medicine for the Elderly assessment, rehabilitation, and continuing care as well as
housing the Medicine for the Elderly Day Hospital.
Royal Hospital for Sick Children
The RHSC, currently on the Yorkhill site but moving to co-locate with the New South Glasgow
Hospital in 2015, is a specialist paediatric hospital providing secondary paediatrics to the whole of
Glasgow. Specialist services provided to the whole of the West of Scotland include Cystic Fibrosis
and Burns and plastic surgery. National tertiary services include Bone marrow and Renal
Transplantation, Cardiac Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and ECMO.
RAH and Clyde
Three acute hospitals cover the population of this region which is 400,000, the Royal Alexandra
Hospital, Paisley, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock and the Vale of Levin District General
Hospital, Alexandria.
Both the RAH and IRH sites are acute hospitals with acute medical and surgical receiving, medical
and surgical sub-specialities and ITU, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and elderly care. RAH also
includes neonatal and general paediatrics, and maternity.
The third hospital site, based at the Vale of Levin Hospital, although smaller, provides acute medical
receiving and elective surgery along with numerous other smaller specialities.
In addition a Microbiology service is provided to all the general practitioners in the region.
Laboratory accommodation and equipment
Individual consultant offices are available, with PCs, providing access to intranet and internet facilities,
and, an extensive e-library access.
A TelePath Laboratory computer system is in operation across all laboratories.
Microbiology General Equipment:
Equipment is provided on a managed service contract which ensures that up to date analytical
equipment will always be available. Currently this includes the BacTalert blood culture system, VITEK.2
automated sensitivity testing, MALDI-TOF bacterial identification, SYSMEX UF100 urine analysis and
