Woodland Hills School District Suggested Summer Reading List Grades K-6 LET’S SET SAIL FOR READING FUN! Dear Parents/Guardians, In order to encourage your children to keep reading throughout the summer, the Woodland Hills School District librarians have compiled a suggested reading list on the following pages. This list of fiction and non-fiction titles covers a variety of authors, interests, and reading levels. You are encouraged to involve your children in reading activities this summer so they will improve their reading skills and grow to appreciate good literature. In addition, reading for enjoyment is a good way to kick back, relax, and survive the hot days of summer. Please consider taking your children to visit the public libraries within or near the school district (see last page for locations). You can obtain other reading suggestions from your local libraries, bookstores, friends, and family members. Our goal is to keep your children interested in reading. Remember that students become better readers by increasing the number of books they read. Sincerely, Woodland Hills School District Librarians Simple Things To Do To Support Your Children’s Reading 1. Read stories and informational writing to your children. Read with expression. Enjoy the language and illustrations. Have your children put the selection in their own words and share their favorite parts. 2. Encourage your children to read. The more they read, the better they read! Visit the library on a regular basis. Set aside a regular silent reading time for the family to enjoy books together. 3. Participate in family literacy and learning activities. Enjoy puppet shows, storytelling programs, plays, concerts, museums, zoos, planetariums, etc., together. Participate in the summer reading program at your local library. Enjoy your time together! 4. Encourage your children to pursue and read about their interests and hobbies. Help your children identify favorite authors, genres, series, and topics that they like to read. 5. Take advantage of real-world opportunities to support your children’s reading, writing, and learning. Shopping, traveling, movie-going, etc., provide excellent opportunities for your children to read labels, packages, maps, and other kinds of information. 6. Supply your children with paper, pencils, crayons, and markers so they can write stories, draw pictures, make books, and do other crafts. Many children enjoy keeping a journal, writing notebook, or scrapbook during the summer. 7. Take advantage of Internet resources to help your children develop as readers, writers, and learners. You may gain access to the Internet through your public library if you do not currently have Internet access in your home. You can find some website ideas at the end of this booklet. Have a wonderful summer together! KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE SUMMER READING LIST Here are some ideas for great reading fun. Please feel free to explore other titles by these authors.
