BAPTISMS
Baptisms are every Sunday at 1:00 PM. Parents are asked
to call the Parish Center and speak with the Priest or
Deacon who is on call and who will assist them in
registering their child for Baptism. The Church assists the
parents by offering instruction on the meaning,
importance, and responsibilities of the sacrament of
Baptism. A Pre-Jordan Baptismal Program for helping
parents prepare for the spiritual birth of their child is held
on the fourth Sunday of most months in the Spirituality
Center following the Noon Mass.
WEDDINGS
Couples planning to marry are asked to contact a Parish

Dear Friends,
As we close in on the date for the World Meeting of Families and the Holy Father’s visit, I often
hear two questions: “How can I be involved?” and “How can I help?” Many of our people want to be
involved in some way, and of course we need all the help we can get.
First, I urge all of you, individuals and families, to attend the World Meeting of Families
Congress. Registration for both the Adult and Youth Congress sessions is open on the World Meeting of
Families/Philadelphia 2015 website, www.WorldMeeting2015.org. You’ll find a variety of registration
package options, and detailed information about each session.
Second, please give serious consideration to hosting a family and opening your home to pilgrims.
This is one of our greatest needs. There simply aren’t enough hotel rooms in our region for the many
people who will come to Philadelphia later this year. We’ve partnered with Homestay, an international
organization with a strong reputation and high level of expertise, to help us with this initiative. They’ve
designed an online portal specifically for the World Meeting of Families, where host families can register
a room, multiple rooms or a whole apartment or home, to be used by visitors. The website will then be
opened to visitors who can search for available rooms and request to stay there for a period of time
during the World Meeting of Families. You can learn more by visiting the “Host a Family” page of
www.WorldMeeting2015.org.
Third, become a World Meeting of Families/Philadelphia 2015 volunteer. We need more than
8,000 volunteers for a wide range of tasks. Our volunteers will be the face of the Archdiocese to people
from around the globe this fall, so this job is vital to our efforts. Volunteer registration will soon open on
the World Meeting of Families website, www.WorldMeeting2015.org. Every volunteer must be at least 18
years of age, a U.S. citizen, and must complete an online background check. On the website you can read
more about the different volunteer jobs available and soon begin the registration process.
Fourth, the historic events that will take place this year in Philadelphia demand not only a great
deal of work, but also the money resources to match. Fundraising falls largely on the shoulders of the
host diocese.
As I’ve said before, we will not use Archdiocesan or parish funds to pay for expenses. Thanks to
business, religious congregation and individual donors across the country, we’ve made good progress in
meeting our resource needs. We’re more than half way to our goals. But with a massive effort like World
Meeting of Families, we need all the financial help we can get. Every financial contribution, no matter
how large or modest, is greatly appreciated. I ask you to please consider helping us reach the goal. Again,
every gift matters, and you can learn more about ways to donate by visiting www.WorldMeeting2015.org.
Fifth and finally, please pray for the success of the World Meeting of Families and the visit of our
extraordinary Pope Francis. This can be a moment of renewal -- the beginning of new energy and life -for the whole Church in Greater Philadelphia. Please help God make that renewal happen through your
active participation, your generosity and your prayers. I’m grateful for all of your support, and I promise
to remember you and your own families in my prayers.
Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,

March 2015
Dear Parishioners,
Thanks to the support, sacrifices, and efforts of many people who share their time, talent, and treasure,
Saint Anselm Parish continues to offer quality Catholic education. What Saint Anselm School offers students
enables them to grow and develop academically, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
The 2015-2016 Budget for Saint Anselm Church and School has raised issues that need to be addressed.
The Budget as it is presented shows a deficit of $24,876. The Budget as presented does not include rental income
for the Annex School Building because at this time there is no one leasing the Annex after June 30, 2015. As you
know, we are advertizing that the School Annex is for lease. The Budget does not include raises for the School
Faculty nor for other School and Church employees. This would have amounted to $27,500. This Budget does not
include monetary gifts at Christmas for the employees which this year amounted to $6,000.
The budget next year necessitates a $100 per student increase in tuition fees. The Budget also reflects that
our school’s tuition fee will now include our Pre K, four year old program. (Until now, Pre K tuition was a
separate fee.) This will be a benefit to families with a 2 nd, 3rd, or 4th child in the school. Raising the tuition fees
$100 per child (Pre K thru 8th) still leaves a deficit.
Archdiocesan guidelines and sound business practices require that a budget be balanced with no
projected deficit. To eliminate the $24,876 deficit, there will be a special tuition appeal the last two weeks
of May and the month of June. 300 people will be asked to give $100 which will be used for tuition
assistance. A person who gives a $100 will be helping to keep one child’s tuition from being $100 higher
than it is. This will generate $30,000 which will balance the budget.
Should the School Annex be rented for $75,000 or more and if the special Tuition Appeal nets
$30,000 then the raises for employees and Christmas gifts totaling $33,500 will be put back in the budget.
The balance of annex rental would be used to offset the projected deficit for Fiscal 2014 - 2015 which
presently is projected to be $60,214. Father Dunleavy has met with the employees who are being affected.
We have advised the Pastor and he has approved our recommendation concerning tuition for next year.
The tuition rates for 2015 - 2016 are:
Number of Children
Pre K thru 8th
1 child
2 children
3 or more
*Category A
**Category B
$3,150
$5,700
$7,650
$ 4,150
$ 7,600
$10,350
***Category C
$ 4,350
$ 8,000
$11,250
*Category A is a reduced tuition for those families whose Church contributions totaled $600.00 or more for
the calendar year 2014
**Category B is the standard tuition category. ***Category C is the tuition for nonparishioners.
As announced this past October (2014), families with children in Catholic elementary and Archdiocesan
Catholic high school are asked to contribute at least $12.00 per week ($600) during this year 2015. Families who
do so are given the reduced tuition.
Anyone who needs to bring tuition matters to our attention is asked to do so by writing and sending your
letter to the Finance Council via the Parish Center. The Finance Council will respond to any and all matters.
Please note that the Council meets monthly so there may be a time lapse between your writing and response. As
pastor, Father Dunleavy is on the Finance Council and attends all meetings.
Sincerely yours,
The Finance Council

Report on the November 2013 Parish Assembly
On Thursday, November 6, 2014, 122 parishioners participated in our Parish Assembly. The
Pastoral Council convened the Assembly as a way to engage parishioners in a Pastoral Planning process.
Pastoral Planning seeks to identify and prioritize ways in which the parish is being called to live out its
mission to be Church.
A Pastoral Plan consists of a mission statement, goals, and objectives. (An objective is a brief,
clear statement of an outcome to be reached within one year as a step toward reaching the goal in the
Pastoral Plan.) The Parish Assembly this past November began the process of formulating a new
Pastoral Plan for Saint Anselm Parish. During the Assembly, participants expressed their thoughts on
the parish by answering and sharing their ideas on a series of questions. Since the Assembly in
November, Pastoral Council members have been discerning the ideas that surfaced during the Assembly
in order to draft a new Mission statement and to identify goals for the pastoral plan. The Pastoral Plan
which is being drafted will direct us for the next three to five years.
1.
2.
3.
4.
The questions that were asked at the Assembly were:
If Jesus were here today, what words would he give us to direct our future?
Why do you think the universal Catholic church exists?
What makes Saint Anselm Parish unique and special?
Before question #4 was asked, participants were presented with some statistics and data; namely:
2010 Census Information; Pastoral Report; Church Attendance (October Count) Sunday
Collections (Financial Report); School Enrollment; CCD Enrollment; Budget Increases
Some concerns raised by demographics were presented to those assembled:
+ many registered parishioners are no longer practicing Catholics
+ large percentage of parishioners are absent at Sunday Mass.
+ approximately 45% of school age children from Grades 1 to 6 are not receiving religious
Education; many children are not receiving religious education after 1st Communion
CCD ends with Level 6 (no CCD Program exists for Grades 7 thru 12).
+ budget increased by $200,000 this year
What can be done to increase the Church’s revenue?
What can be done to lower school tuition so as to sustain/increase school enrollment?
+ What can be done to tell others with whom we have no contact (in the neighborhood and parish)
about Jesus and our Catholic Faith?
+ What can be done to keep people from drifting away?
Question #4 asked those assembled:
From the demographics, what do you suggest should be areas of concentration for the
future of St. Anselm Parish?
The responses that were given (written, spoken, shared, and recorded) to questions numbers 1, 2,
3 were used by the Pastoral Council to discern and formulate a new Mission statement. This new Mission
Statement which will be presented at the Assembly on April 16th is printed on the next page.
The responses that were given at the Assembly to question #4 were used by the Pastoral Council to
discern and formulate two goals for our Pastoral Plan. These goals are printed on the next page. They
will be presented and discussed at the Assembly on April 16th.

Call to All Saint Anselm Parishioners
You and all members of Saint Anselm Parish are called to a Parish Assembly on Thursday
evening, April 16th in Our Lady of Victory Hall. Doors will open at 6:30 PM so that before the Assembly
parishioners may informally gather to view the displays, converse with one another, and to enjoy some
homemade desserts.
Assembly – April 16th – Purpose
Parishioners are needed to come to the April 16th Assembly
+ to ratify our new Mission Statement (see below)
+ to affirm our goals
(see below)
+ to brainstorm and identify ways to help the Parish achieve the goals listed below. Parishioners may
also volunteer themselves or people they know to roll up their sleeves and to get involved in one of
the goals.
Proposed New Mission Statement for Saint Anselm Church
The Roman Catholic community of St. Anselm Parish
in Far Northeast Philadelphia
is committed to living the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
In imitation of Christ,
we provide opportunities for
spiritual growth,
quality Catholic teaching for people of all ages,
and
assistance to the poor, the sick, and the burdened.
Challenged to live the gospel message of Jesus Christ,
we strive to
reach out to the non-practicing Catholic,
involve our youth in parish activities, and
motivate all to contribute time, talent,
and to be fiscally responsible.
Goals for the new Pastoral Plan
Goal # 1
To establish An Evangelization Committee
During the April 16th Assembly, we will explore ideas about what the focus of the
Evangelization Team will look like at Saint Anselm Parish.
Consider: how can we improve how we communicate our faith; reach out to fallen away
Catholics; attract people; increase Church attendance at Sunday Mass; improve
enrollment in CCD and establish a Grade 7 thru 12 CCD program; …………………
Goal #2
To outline a Development Plan for Saint Anselm School
During the April 16th Assembly, we will explore ideas about what the focus of the
Development Plan will look like for Saint Anselm School.
Consider: how we can sustain, increase enrollment in our school; lower school tuition;
make tuition affordable; improve fundraising programs; activate the School Alumni;
attract more volunteers; …………………..

Dear Parishioners,
Spring Cleaning the Church – Volunteers
needed
Holy Week begins next Sunday
On Wednesday afternoon (March 25th)
beginning at 1:00 PM, we would like to give the
Church a good spring cleaning of the pews, window
sills, and sanctuary. Volunteers are needed. We will
supply the Murphy’s Wood Oil, soap, caffeine, and
sugar. Volunteers are asked to bring a bucket and a
cleaning cloth.
Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, the beginning
of Holy Week. The ceremonies of Holy Week enable
us to experience in our soul, heart, and mind all of
the life-giving graces which Jesus made possible for
us through his Passion, death and resurrection.
These graces are bestowed upon all who participate.
Please plan to attend.
Snow Removal Collection
“We offer a place of Welcome . . .
for all to worship and grow. . .”
These words are taken from the Saint Anselm
Mission Statement.
Palm Sunday, Easter and all the days in
between provide an opportunity for all who attend
Mass weekly to be welcoming and hospitable to those
who do not. Please help us fulfill this part of our
Mission Statement by extending a warm welcome to
those who may only be joining us for Palm Sunday
and/or Easter. Their encounter with you may be the
means, the inspiration, by which God is leading them
back to a more “active participation in the Sunday
Eucharist and in the life of the Parish”.
Confession is good for the Soul
At this time of year, we remember and
celebrate that Jesus willingly accepted death on the
cross so that forgiveness of sin and new life would be
possible for people. Throughout the ages, many
people have experienced the shepherding love of
Jesus who has forgiven and brought them back after
they sinned or strayed away.
I highly recommend to everyone that you
make a good confession before Easter. In the
sacrament of Reconciliation, Jesus is truly present
forgiving, healing, restoring, and bringing back to life
whatever has been adversely affected by sin.
Confession Schedule:

Race for Education Mailing Party – Thank you
Thanks to the many volunteers who
participated in the Race for Education Mailing Party
this past week. The Race for Education is a major
fund raising event which benefits our school. We are
most grateful to all who participated as well as to our
school families for providing the labels and names of
the people who will be asked to financially support
the race.
Next weekend (March 28/29), a second
collection will be taken to help defray the cost of
snow removal. Snow removal this winter has cost
over $12,000. Please respond generously to this
collection. An envelope for your use is attached to
the front of the bulletin.
Night At The Races – Thank You
The Night at the Races generated a profit of
$4,942.35 which will benefit our school. I am most
grateful to all who volunteered their time, energy,
and service to this fundraiser and to all who attended
and participated.
Super Bowl Mania Tickets – Thank you
Our Super Bowl Football Mania fundraiser
raised $4,200 for the Parish which will benefit our
school. I am grateful to all who sold and bought the
tickets.
Lenten Coin Folders
Your Lenten almsgiving coin folders may be
given to the Ushers or placed in the baskets on the
tables with the bulletins. Thank you for your Lenten
sacrificial charity.
Woodchips – Return & Nail to the Cross
At the beginning of Lent, woodchips were
given out. The woodchips were intended to remind
people to be faithful to their Lenten program of
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (works of charity).
Made of wood, the woodchip also reminded us of the
cross of Jesus, who willingly accepted His cross so
that forgiveness of sin and new life would be possible
for all of us.
At the end of Lent, we nail the woodchips to
the cross to ritualize that we want to be connected to
Christ who, by his cross and resurrection, graces us
with forgiveness, healing, Easter, and new life.
Artistically, image on the Woodchip how
Jesus has been companion (2 sets of footprints) and
shepherd (1 set of footprints).
#7-016
Before returning or nailing the woodchip, you
may draw or put a design on it to express how Jesus
has graced you with healing, recovery or new life
(Easter) during Lent.
Recall how you have experienced Jesus in
your Lenten program of prayer, fasting, and works
of charity. Can you image this in some way?
Perhaps draw a shepherd’s staff (for how

Vincentian Message…
In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Whoever serves
me must follow me, and where I am, there also
will my servant be. The father will honor whoever
serves me.” When we help the poor we are truly
followers of Jesus, servant of the poor.
As you place your gift in the Society of St.
Vincent DePaul poor box, know that you are a
sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and
you give them Easter hope and joy.
