Three basic types of bridges: The Beam Bridge- The Beam Bridge consists of a horizontal beam supported at each end by piers. The Truss Bridge- The Truss Bridge consists of an assembly of triangles. The Arch Bridge- The Arch Bridge consists of arches made from steel or concrete. Beam Bridges were one of the very first types of bridges. They were made from a wooden log laid across a river. Another type of bridge in the early times was the Wood Frame Bridge. They were made from wood grown locally. A Clapper Bridge is a bridge made of large stones and cement. Romans were the first group of people the construct Arch Bridges. Arches were used because they formed a strong structure to support roadways. The early long-span bridges in Asia were called the Calpanary Bridge. Engineers began using concrete in bridge building in 1822. Arch Bridges, Suspension Bridges and the Baltimore Bridge were built using the truss design. The first cast-iron bridge was built in 1779, at Ironbridge in England and spans river Severn. The Suspension Bridge was changed by the use of metal because they could be made longer and stronger. The Baltimore Bridge appears to be the strongest because it seemed to be built very strong. The main parts of a Suspension Bridge are the pylons, deck, stringers and cable. Defined Cable-stayed Bridge: A Cable-stayed Bridge is a bridge that consists of one or more columns, with cables supporting the bridge deck. Girder Bridge: A Girder Bridge is a bridge built of girders placed on bridge abutments and fountain piers. Viaduct: A Viaduct is a bridge composed of several small parts. Suspension bridge: A Suspension bridge is a bridge in which the deck is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders. Draw Bridge: A Draw Bridge is a type of bridge that is movable, and has been used with the entrance of a castle. By Lucy Z
