EXPERIENCE REPORT The student report will be published on the: Study Abroad website (under “Experiences” from partner universities) TSH study abroad blackboard page I am fine with my report being published online: YES ANR: 148484 Name: Niels Verhaegh E-mail: nielsverhaegh@gmail.com Exchange semester: Fall , 2015 Academic year: 2015/2016 Host University: University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) Country: Australia I GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL The university campus is located just outside the Central Business District (CBD) of Sydney. The CBD is the middle of Sydney and runs all the way to the Harbor Bridge and the Opera house. The last years the university is investing a lot of money in education and new buildings. So you have the newest facilities at your disposal. It is a very big university, with a lot of international students. In some of my courses there were hardly any Australian people. In the CBD there are a lot of nice place to go for food or drinks, but if you go outside the CBD, there are also some very nice places for food or drinks and they are a bit less expensive (Yes, less expensive and not cheaper ). Sydney is a very nice city, it is safe, lots of nice people and nice bars. II PRACTICAL INFORMATION The Visa procedure is very easy and quick. I went in the fall (spring in Australia), so I left around 15 Juli and the semester runs until the end of November, but your visa date will be 31 deccember, so you can stay until the end of January in Australia (End semester date + one month)! You need an electronic visa and I received it a couple of hours after I submitted my request. I already booked a flight before my visa, and my check-in date in my apartment (oncampus) was 17 Juli, so I landed that day in the morning. UTS housing arranged a free shuttle from the airport to the university. You can check in and get the keys at the university. And the university has an own shuttle service which will bring you to your housing accommodation (only oncampus). There are a lot of volunteers waiting to help you at the university and at your housing. I would also recommend to arrive on the check-in date, because there will be introduction activities, so you can meet a lot of people already! The on-campus housing is very good organized, but there is a lot of security at some of them, so partying late and stuff is more difficult. But I can still recommend it. The introduction week at UTS are just formal activities and welcomes. And they don’t organize an introduction week like we do in Tilburg (Or other universities). But we organized our own gartherings/parties during the introduction week. The Living costs in Sydney are very high, your rent will be around 1000 AUD a month. Groceries are very expensive and alcohol aswell. Sometimes it can be cheaper to eat out at a bar. This because at almost all bars you can get a student discount. Living Costs Please outline your approximate monthly budget whilst on exchange: Housing 1000 AUD a month Food 300 AUD a month Transport 40 AUD a month Books 200 AUD total UTS has a lot of clubs and extracurricular activities. I joint the outdoor club and the UTS motorsports team. I hardly went to activities of the outdoors club, because I spend all my time at the UTS motorsports team. But at these clubs and teams you also meet lot of Australian people and not only international people. II ACADEMIC INFORMATION The courses and way of teaching is pretty much the same, groupwork, individual parts, and exams. Just the same at at TiU.
