Year 2
had great time
learning about the importance of
road safety this week. We got
the opportunity to practice our
skills too. We finished off reading
The Twits during Literacy; what a
funny couple they are! We have
been sorting during maths using a
pictogram. During our IPC topic
work we thought carefully about
the different jobs people do
around the world. It's been a very
busy week!

This week in Reception: Our new topic 'Treasures' started with much excitement when we found a pirate's treasure chest had been left in
the classroom! We have set up our 'Pirate Ship' role play and made eye patches and pirate hats to wear. Today we have been learning about
road safety, the dangers of traffic and why we must hold an adults hand when we are near a road. Ask your child about Percy, who visited us
today! We will be leading the KS1 mass next Thursday. If your child has a reading, please help them learn the words; they were sent home
at the beginning of the week. Thank you! We look forward to seeing you in church on Thursday 24th June at 9.30 am.
Mrs Dykes
NEW R.E. SCHEME IN SEPTEMBER In September the school will begin to use a new RE Scheme “The Way, The Truth, &
The Life”. The RE Committee was established to implement the scheme consisting of teachers, governors, teaching assistants,
parents and parishioners. More information will be available soon. Mrs J. Smith

you can help please see Mrs Diamond. If you are available to man a stall, please see Mrs Smith as soon as possible. Thank you
NETBALL – just to confirm that this week was the last netball session for Year 6. We would like to thankyou for a brilliant year and
wish you all the luck in your new high school and very much hope some of you will continue playing. We hope you have had as
much fun as we have! Andrea, Louise and Helen - Netball coaches
Year One Update - Well done to all the children who took part in the 'Wake Up Shake Up' festival at Benton Park last Thursday. The children
had put a lot of effort into getting their routine ready and we were really proud of their achievements. This week as part of our road safety week ,
we have used a really good website to help us keep safe. Please have a look at this at home with your child. Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Brook, Mrs
Coulson and Mr Osborne
Please would all owners of green school jackets check the reflective triangles on the sides of the jacket for the initials PJD as we
have a missing one at the lower end of school. If you have this jacket, please pass it to Mrs Dykes. Many Thanks
SUNSHINE AWARDS THIS WEEK GO TO:Y6: Luke Hourigan, Y5: Oliver Parker,
Y4: Mackenzie Flint, Y3: Nicholas Gunnoe, Y2: Isla Mangan, Y1: Jessica Heyburn, Rec: Mason Green
ON THE GOLDEN TABLE THIS WEEK WERE:
Francesca Williams (Rec), Tyler Stringwell (Y6), Ella Turner (Y1) and Ellie Woffenden (Y2)
The 'old team' was back in action again this week! Years 3 and 4 proved that the
magnificent music at last month's First Holy Communion Mass was no fluke, by producing
an equally superb
performance at the Trinity and All Saints College concert last
night. 7 schools from across the diocese gathered to join forces for a huge concert
and, amongst the 14 songs we had to learn (yes 14! A massive task. But nothing daunts a
St Joseph's musician so we did it brilliantly!!) we were privileged to give the first
performance of our 'new look' school song. I know we all love ' St Joseph Was
A
Carpenter' and now thanks to Mr Cullen and Sally Egan we have a wonderful new
arrangement that will give generations of the St Joseph's family great pleasure. It
certainly went down well with the audience at TASC! I was so proud of our musicians who
as usual worked extremely hard and performed wonderfully. Do look out for the assembly
premiere of our new song within the next few weeks, you wouldn't want to miss out on
one of the highights of the Otley musical world's year!!
Sports Day:
Last week was sports week, and because of the weather, we didn't manage to enjoy it as much as planned. With two
Sports Days being rained off! Luckily, we have managed to pencil in the 19th of July for our new Sports Day - let us
hope that we have sunshine! We'd like to ask for your support for this event; St Mary's will not be able to send helpers
so we are asking for any parents or (much) older siblings to support staff at each station.
Spirit Alive:
From an unsuccessful Sports Day... to a glorious Spirit Alive Day! Year 5 children worked amazingly hard to organise
and arrange the activities, themes and prizes to raise money for The British Heart Foundation - the day couldn't have
been better! Everybody (including the adults!) went home wearily after a fabulously fun day of activities! Well done to
everybody who made the effort to dress up; you all looked wonderful! We raised a fantastic £342.10!!

Year Six have been studying Road Safety all week and have even written a Police Accident Report on a
hypothetical accident situation. We have also been preparing for our World Cup Assembly next Friday. We
were ‘Bowled Over’ at the Bowling Club and we have learnt a new skill this week. Please ensure that you
have read the letters sent home with your child today. Enjoy the Carnival – Mr Gallacher & Mrs Condliffe
